Workshop focuses on fretting fatigue in medical devices.

July 23, 2009 Scheduled for November 10, 2009, Fretting Fatigue of Metallic Medical Devices and Materials workshop will focus on identifying related fretting activities or concerns involving either medical devices or materials. Co-chairs invite participants that have looked at fretting of interfaces of materials used in orthopedic and cardiovascular devices, shown evidence that fretting can occur in these medical devices in-vivo, or developed methods to evaluate fretting of these devices/materials.

July 23, 2009 NADCA-sponsored International Die Casting Design Competition showcases outstanding die cast designs. Eight winners and two honorable mentions were chosen this year. According to NADCA design engineer Dan Meyer, "Methods such as automatic de-gating, direct injection, multiple-cavity dies for complex high-tolerance parts, as well as new gating and die designs requiring minimal or no machining of final die casting...showed their applied creativity."

FAA Makes Statement on first regional airline safety forum.

July 23, 2009 FAA Administrator, Randy Babbitt, made a statement on what was the first in a series of 12 nationwide regional airline safety forums designed to reduce risk at regional airlines. The forum was attended by 65 safety executives representing airlines and unions, and discussions focused on air carrier management responsibilities for crew education and support, professional standards and flight discipline, training standards and performance, and mentoring.

Bentsen, Jr., ELFA supports Financial Accounting Standards Board and International Accounting Standards Board as they seek to establish workable accounting standard that applies to assets and liabilities arising from lease transactions. However, proposed lease accounting model is unduly complex and will impose compliance burden on lessees that will not result in significant improvement in quality or reliability of financial information.
ATA reports decline in passenger demand, cargo traffic.

Number of passengers traveling on U.S. airlines in June fell 6.5% while average price to fly one mile fell 20.7%. Compounding the softening demand for passenger travel, U.S. airlines saw cargo traffic - as measured in revenue ton miles - decline 20% year over year in May 2009. Latest results continue to reflect weak global economy and lingering impact of the H1N1 influenza outbreak.

NTSB announces resignation of Chairman Mark V. Rosenker.

July 22, 2009 Member and Acting Chairman Mark V. Rosenker has submitted letter of resignation to President Obama after leading NTSB for 4 yr. Rosenker became Member and Vice Chairman of NTSB in March 2003 and then Acting Chairman, and in 2006 was sworn in as 11th Chairman. During Rosenker's chairmanship, NTSB marked various major transportation safety achievements and investigative challenges. He has also been recognized for promoting boating safety.

Higgins joined Board on January 3, 2006, and during her tenure, she was on scene at several major accident investigations, including Blue Line derailment in Chicago in July 2006; May 2008 collision of 2 light rail trains in Newton, MA; August 2008 crash of firefighters' helicopter in Weaverville, CA; and the ditching of US Airways airliner in Hudson River in Jan 2009.
