AIA lauds export control reform enactment.

October 18, 2013 AIA welcomes enactment of first set of revisions to U.S. Munitions List that are removing onerous controls on exports of essentially commercial technology used in military aircraft (Category VIII) and military aircraft engines (Category XIX). Subjecting these technologies to export control requirements of Commerce Control List will allow for more appropriate reviews and restrictions while making trade with America’s closest military allies and partners more predictable, efficient, and transparent.

October 18, 2013 IPC awarded first IPC J-STD-004 Qualified Products Listing (QPL) certificate to Indium Corporation's Clinton, NY, USA facility. Indium Corporation was first manufacturer to participate in IPC's Validation Services QPL/QML Program, which provides audit, inspection, testing, and advisory services to suppliers throughout electronics industry to promote supply chain verification. Indium's Clinton, NY, USA facility was first site to undergo IPC's assessment/audit based around IPC J-STD-004.

Record of 557, set 23 years ago, could be eclipsed as Council continues to get registrations each day. To support attendees, ASC is offering new convention app and mobile website that will allow attendees to create schedule based on sessions being offered, view speaker bios and exhibitor information, access floor plans, and connect with other convention attendees.
ASTM and NAMII sign memorandum of understanding.

October 17, 2013 Memorandum of understanding (MOU), signed by ASTM International and National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII), outlines framework of cooperation regarding development of ASTM standards for additive manufacturing. Specifically, MOU states that standards for additive manufacturing will be developed by ASTM International Committee F42 on Additive Manufacturing Technologies. NAMII will participate in ASTM process by providing technical expertise as well as technical content.

October 17, 2013 Published in April 2013 as new standard, NEMA SSL 7A-2013 Phase-Cut Dimming for Solid-State Lighting: Basic Compatibility has been referenced by most recent versions of Zhaga Books 2 and 8. These define socketable downlight LED light engines (LLEs) with integrated control gear. In part, reference is due to SSL 7A being only available specification that covers 2-wire, mains-powered, phase-control dimming interface.
IREC Paper addresses overlap in PV solar approval processes.

(IREC), examines in detail overlap and synchronization of approval processes involved, in addition to their individual steps, and offers possible solutions on how to make them more efficient. Paper also presents 4 case studies provided by IREC that outline approval paths for PV systems in 4 cities in the United States.

SPE names finalists of Automotive Innovation Awards.

Nominations were first subjected to pre-qualification review, and then were presented before panel of industry experts. Some finalist innovations include semi-convertible sunroof system, window glazing system, all-olefinic liftgate, decklid trim with self-locking feature, and high-heat turbo EGR sleeve.
Veto by Governor Brown incurs BIO's disappointment.

October 15, 2013 BIO was disappointed to learn that CA Governor Jerry Brown vetoed legislation, Senate Bill 598, designed to address regulatory issues related to interchangeability of biological medicines. Vetoed bill aligned with all 5 BIO principles on biologic substitution, properly preserved patient access to accurate prescription information, maintained incentives for innovation, and promoted competitive market for biologic therapies. Also, bill included full transparency in substitution process.
TRFA Annual Meeting increases attendance by 14%.

October 15, 2013 TRFA began its second decade with 14% jump in meeting attendance, breaking previous attendance record for 2012's 10th Anniversary event. VMA releases Employment Snapshot Report.

October 14, 2013 During briefing at its 75th Anniversary Annual Meeting, VMA reported that the valve industry employs 50% more people than a decade ago and is expecting to add many more this year. VMA unveiled the Employment Snapshot Report and discussed new trends affecting economic outlook of valve industry. More than half of responding member companies reported their domestic hiring was growing 5% this year. Nearly 1/5 expected growth up to 10% and another fifth is planning to grow their ranks up to 16%.
NEMA publishes annual standards and products guide.

October 14, 2013 NEMA has published NEMA CG 1-2013 Manufactured Graphite/Carbon Electrodes, a standard that adopts the requirements of two international standards—IEC 60529 and IEC/TR 62157—concerning dimensions and designations of graphite and carbon electrodes used in arc furnace applications. All requirements in CG 1-1999 were replaced with requirements from IEC 60529 and IEC/TR 62157.
ASTM Roofing Committee developing sustainability standards.

October 14, 2013 Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing, through Subcommittee D08.24 on Sustainability, is developing ASTM WK26599, Guide for Design of Sustainable, Low-Slope Roofing Systems. Standard describes process by which designer or specifier looks at demands and factors that roofing system must be capable of withstanding. External factors include wind, weather, rainfall, chemical exposure, and foot traffic. Building pressurization and humidification are among internal factors to be considered.
