NIST develops method to test fireproofing material.

October 6, 2008

To obtain thermal conductivity information at elevated temperatures, NIST's Dale Bentz and colleagues developed slug calorimeter. Technique uses thin square slab of steel sandwiched between slabs of fireproofing material. Guard insulation surrounds sides of sample, and 3 temperature probes are inserted into slug to measure heat flowing to steel. Combining this data with known heat capacities and densities, researchers can determine material's thermal conductivity at various temperatures. Read More
