AAMA Updates Document for solar reflective surfaces.

AAMA updated 2013's "Voluntary Specification, Performance Requirements and Test Procedures for Solar Reflective Finishes," which describes test procedures and performance requirements for pigmented organic coatings applied to aluminum, fiber reinforced thermoset or wood and cellulosic composite profiles for windows, doors, wall panels, skylights, sloped glazing, and similar products. ANSI/ASAE S396.3, Combine Capacity and Performance Test Procedure, includes updated text that clarifies wording and incorporates new practices for performing loss testing on combine harvesters. ASTM Vehicle Pavement Systems Committee honors Kevin McGhee.

Kevin K. McGhee, associate principal scientist at Virginia Transportation Research Council in Charlottesville, VA, received Tilton E. Shelbourne Memorial Award from ASTM International Committee E17 on Vehicle Pavement Systems. ASTM member since 1997, McGhee was recognized for his work in vehicle pavement industry and his active contributions as past chairman of Committee E17. McGhee holds BA in civil engineering from Virginia Tech and MA in civil engineering from University of Virginia. Read More

Dense Transparent Materials offer new way to control light.

July 18, 2016

Researchers recently made the discovery that a special class of materials called "hyperuniform materials" can be both dense and transparent. This work demonstrates a new way to control light and could lead to novel materials for many light-based applications including solar photovoltaics. In OSA's journal Optica, researchers led by Rémi Carminati, Institut Langevin, ESPCI Paris and CNRS, France, detail the transparency properties they discovered using computer simulations. Read More

NEMA announced that ANSI Accredited Standards Committee C136 published ANSI C136.49-2016 American National Standard for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment—Plasma Lighting. Standard defines the electrical and mechanical requirements of plasma type light sources for use in roadway and area lighting luminaires. EPA Announces Funds to clean up contaminated brownfield sites.

U.S. EPA announced ~$10.7 million in supplemental funding to help communities clean up contaminated brownfield properties. Supplemental funding, provided to 33 successful Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grantees, is specifically intended to help 40+ communities carry out cleanup and redevelopment projects that will also help communities create jobs and protect people's health and environment.
