ID-10072426A report from the politically conservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI) takes a refreshingly flexible look at the “intersection” of heavy U.S. dependence on oil and large federal budget deficits. It notes that, “surging oil prices and trillion dollar federal deficits… have been independently studied, discussed, and debated, [but] little attention has been paid to the interactions between these two factors.”

Titled “Oil and the Debt,” the report examine “how the quadrupling of oil prices over the last decade has affected federal budget deficits and debt” along with the question of “whether reducing dependence on oil in the future could improve the federal budget balance.”
