The Global Packaging Project Report from the Consumer Goods Forum Outlines Measurement System for Sustainability

The Global Packaging Project (GPP) Report focuses on the effects of packaging and the impact of packaging on products and on the business itself.  Too much packaging is just as bad as too little packaging. The report looks to help companies find the optimum pack design and create language that can be used consistently by trading partners to enable informed dialogue for packaging and sustainability.

The report lays out a framework that companies can use to build their goal of sustainable packaging. This framework is broken down into three parts.

Part 1: What is the role of packaging? Packaging should:

- Protect the product

- Promote the product

- Provide information, on product, usage, health and safety, disposal, etc.

- Enable the convenient transportation and usage of the product

- Allow unitization of the product through the supply chain

- Support efficient handling of the product, again, throughout the supply chain

Part 2: The Principles of Sustainability. Sustainable packaging must look at how it has an impact on the following issues:

-Environment,

-Economic

-Social aspects

and must take in the importance of product Life Cycle covering raw material acquisition to final disposal.

Part 3: Packaging + Sustainability. Packaging can positively contribute to the sustainability by being:

 - designed holistically with the product in order to optimise overall environmental performance

- made from responsibly sourced materials

- able to meet market criteria for performance and cost

- manufactured using clean production technologies

- efficiently recoverable after use

- sourced, manufactured, transported and recycled using renewable energy.

Pilot programs have been developed to work on the tenets of packaging and of the language to be used within the communities to meet the same goals. Companies involved in the pilot programs include AEON, Coca-Cola, Kraft, Henkel, and Target.
