New research underscores a multitude of factors behind a decline in U.S. energy consumption in 2011. Natural gas, wind energy and high-efficiency energy technologies were key contributors to the dip.

Flow charts released by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) this month show that American energy use declined in the transportation, commercial and residential sectors, while industrial energy consumption increased slightly. The LLNL, in Livermore, Calif., is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. Overall, American energy use fell in 2011, from 98 quads in 2010 to 97.3 quads.
