Sustainability Spotlight: DOE Recognizes R&D Achievements in Energy-Saving Lighting Technology

At its ninth annual SSL R&D workshop, “Transformations in Lighting,” held from Jan. 31–Feb. 2 in Atlanta, Georgia, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) recognized six research and development (R&D) project teams, from companies and learning institutions, for their achievements in advancing the science and technology of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).

The three-day event was attended by researchers, manufacturers, academic leaders, and government professionals interested in keeping up-to-date on the latest solid-state lighting technology developments. The agenda focused on the understanding of technology issues and trends, lessons learned from the products on the market today, and a look towards future lighting solutions.

The DOE recognized the following organizations for significant breakthroughs and achievements in 2011:

  • Cree, Inc., was recognized for developing an LED that enables a new, high-efficiency power supply architecture to improve overall lighting system efficacy.
  • Osram Sylvania was recognized for its work developing an LED replacement for 2′ x 2′ fluorescent fixtures that has achieved extremely high energy efficiency.
  • Philips Lighting was recognized for its efforts to develop a family of LED drivers that are smaller, cheaper, and more efficient.
  • Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was recognized for its efforts towards improving the color rendering of LEDs.
  • Universal Display Corporation was recognized for completing two pre-prototype undercabinet phosphorescent OLED systems that have achieved high efficiency levels.
  • White Optics was recognized for developing a composite coating to optimize the light output of SSL systems by maximizing reflection.

The U.S. DOE has long-supported solid-state lighting R&D to accelerate market introduction of high-efficiency, high-performance SSL products. To learn more about its efforts, visit http://www1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/ssl/index.html
