Sustainability Spotlight: Who Has the Greenest IT of All?
Computerworld has released its list of the top 12 green-IT organizations. Over 70 participants participated in an online survey, against which Computerworld applied a set of criteria, developed with the help of green-IT industry experts, to find the organizations that are implementing smart, efficient strategies to green their IT operations. A second list was also created to identify the greenest IT vendors and data center suppliers.
Leading the pack in 2011 were Kaiser Permanente, KPMG, State Street and Allstate, while Fujitsu, HP, Accenture and Microsoft topped the list for green IT vendors and data center suppliers.
Computerworld used a survey to gauge such factors as data retention policies, server virtualization, product purchasing, LEED and Energy Star certification, equipment recycling, use of videoconferencing, goal setting, executive commitment, and programs to measure, benchmark, analyze and lower energy consumption. Some highlights from the top 3:
• At Kaiser Permanente, data center IT and facilities groups joined forces and made changes that resulted in cutting 7.2 million kilowatt-hours of power from overall data center operations — and over $770,000 from power budgets.
• NY-based accounting firm KPMG met with success by working to consolidate data centers and implement other energy saving strategies, including raising the ambient temperature in the data center, raising the temperature of the water in the cooling tower, and migrating to blade server technology.
• Proving that two is not always better than one, the IT dept at financial services firm State Street deployed compression and deduplication technologies that resulted in reducing storage requirements by more than 40%. It also uses a private cloud to advance the firm’s green objectives, resulting in a 5-to-1 reduction in hardware.
