Green Packaging is Expected to Continue Growing

A report from Global Industry Analysts, Inc. (GIA) shows that sustainable packaging showed “impressive” growth in 2008-2009 and that it will continue to trend upward.  The report entitled “Sustainable (Green) Packaging: A Global Strategic Business Report” predicts that the global market for sustainable packaging will reach $142.42 billion by 2015.

Sustainable packaging is defined by the GIA as using recycled materials and renewable resources. The growth of sustainable packaging is being driven by certain factors including:

•increased awareness of environmental hazards related to disposal and recycling of packaging wastes;

• government initiatives to minimize greenhouse gas emissions;

 and

• stringent regulations.

Although the trend is global, Europe and the U.S. account for more than 70% of the global market. The report states that the Asia-Pacific region is expected to have the fastest growth of green packaging. In the U.S., recycled material comprises close to 90% of demand, making it the largest packaging category, while biodegradable materials represent that fastest growing segment.
