Water Soluble Film offers chemical compatibility.

Press Release Summary:

Offered in thicknesses from 1.5-3 mil, M-8900 copolymer-based, polyvinyl alcohol film is developed for compatibility with low pH products and offers stability with boron-containing compounds. Packaging chemicals in film allows manufacturers to minimize environmental impact of packaging and facilitate safe handling of products by providing pre-packaged, pre-measured, unit-dose product. Film eliminates contact between chemical and user and dissolves completely.

MonoSol Introduces M-8900 Water Soluble Film to Improve Chemical Compatibility with Wide Range of Products

September 20, 2005 - MonoSol LLC, the world leader in specialty water soluble films, introduces M-8900, a new copolymer-based polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) water soluble film ideal for a wide range of products, including highly acidic and highly alkaline chemicals. Specifically developed for compatibility with low pH products that historically challenged PVOH films, M-8900 dramatically widens chemical compatibility, allowing a much more diverse range of products to be packed in unit doses.

M-8900 offers considerably improved chemical compatibility. Additionally, the new PVOH film is compatible with acidic formulations, including sulfamic acid (used for metal and ceramic cleaning, textile and paper pulp bleach, hard-water scale removal), sodium bisulfate (used for industrial cleaners, metal pickling compounds, sulfuric acid substitute in dye-baths, disinfectants, pH lowering in swimming pools), potassium phosphate, monobasic (found in nutrient solutions, buffers, sequestrants), sodium phosphate, monobasic (used for boiler water treatment, dyeing, acid cleansers, buffers), calcium phosphate, monobasic (found in many fertilizers) and ammonium phosphate, hemibasic (used for metal cleaning). However, all chemical formulations having relatively strong acid reactions in water are candidates for MonoSol's M-8900.

The new M-8900 also offers stability with boron-containing compounds, which have historically been notoriously incompatible with PVOH films. The two commonly found borate materials are sodium borate, also known as sodium tetraborate and borax (found in herbicides, fertilizers, rust inhibitors, bleaching agents) and sodium perborate (used in formulations where a source of oxygen is required).

Packaging chemicals in MonoSol's water soluble films allows manufacturers to reduce the environmental impact of packaging and improve the safe handling of their products by providing users with a pre-packaged, pre-measured unit-dose product. The package dissolves completely, eliminating the need to dispose of contaminated packages or intermediary mixing containers. And since water soluble pouches eliminate direct contact between the chemical product and the user, manufacturers of toxic products alleviate product safety concerns.

Chemical packaging benefits from MonoSol technology due to the added convenience offered to consumers using the pre-measured unit doses. Since direct contact between the chemical product and the user is eliminated, higher product concentrations are possible. With more highly concentrated product, manufacturers can increase production volume and reduce the size of secondary packaging, which improves the environmental impact of the package and reduces shipping costs.

M-8900 film is available from MonoSol in thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 3 mil (38 to 76 microns)
