Atmel's UHF ASK/FSK Receiver ICs for TPMS and RKE Applications Provide Best Trade-off between High Integration, High Performance and Worldwide Frequency Coverage

HEILBRONN, Germany, Sept. 10 -- Atmel(R) Corporation (NASDAQ:ATML) announced today the availability of the new ATA5723, ATA5724, and ATA5728 UHF ASK/FSK receiver ICs, extending Atmel's existing broad portfolio of automotive RF devices. These three new devices offer the best compromise between high integration, outstanding performance, and worldwide frequency coverage. These three new ICs are pin compatible, which means they can be used, without board design changes, for all standard automotive frequency ranges: 313 to 317 MHz (ATA5723), 432 to 436 MHz (ATA5724), and 868 to 870 MHz (ATA5728). The devices are manufactured using Atmel's RF BiCMOS process. Housed in a small footprint SSO20 package, they are a perfect fit for Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) applications.

The ATA5723, ATA5724, and ATA5728 support the typically used Manchester and Bi-phase coding signals. In addition, they provide a logarithmic RSSI output, which enables customers to achieve good resolution at low field strengths. The ICs' excellent receiving selectivity is accomplished by an integrated image rejection mixer with 30 dB rejection, -113 dBm sensitivity, and improved selectivity due to the integrated IF filter, low-phase-noise VCO, PLL, and loop filter.

The new receiver ICs need few external devices and no external filters -- adding to their cost-efficiency. Ten passive components, a crystal, and an RF antenna are all that is typically needed to create a receiver board application. Additionally, due to the ICs' large oscillation margin, designers can choose very low-cost crystals.

The ATA5723, ATA5724, and ATA5728 are based on Atmel's well-known ATA5743, which has set a worldwide standard with its unique polling mode functionality. As a result, the devices' polling features allows the microcontroller to remain in standby mode, enabling very low current consumption for complete applications. The active current consumption is specified at about 8 mA in receiving mode. The single-ended RF input allows easy adaptation of lambda/4 or printed loop antennas and leads to relaxed tolerance requirements for RF matching components.

Availability and Pricing

Samples of the ATA5723/ATA5724/ATA5728 are now available in SSO20 packages. Pricing starts at US $1.40 (for 10k piece quantities). Customers of the three new receivers ICs can use the software currently available for the ATA5743. Evaluation boards, ATA5723-DK, ATA5724-DK and ATA5728-DK, to support the system designer are also available at a cost of US $99.
