Exar Introduces High Performance, Low Voltage, Quad UART Product Family - Most Extensive Quad Offering in Industry

Supports Faster Data Rates and Offers Multiple FIFO and Package Sizes to Address Continuing Customer Demand for Industrial and Networking Applications

FREMONT, Calif., Sept. 18 /-- Exar Corporation (NASDAQ:EXAR), a leading provider of high-performance, mixed-signal silicon solutions for the worldwide communications infrastructure added a new family of high performance, low voltage Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitters (UARTs) to its growing serial communications product portfolio. The XR16V554/V564/V654 four-channel series is ideal for a variety of battery- operated consumer products including portable devices, as well as industrial applications such as factory automation/process control, telecommunications and networking, amongst others.

"With 16, 32, and 64-byte FIFO choices, customers can match their application's requirements more precisely," said Levent Ozcolak, vice president of Marketing, Interface Products. "The lower operating voltage and the resulting power saving along with the backwards compatibility with higher voltage Quad-UARTs provide a smoother transition from legacy 5V designs to 3.3V operating voltage."

Series Details
Composed of six different devices, the XR16Vxx4 series includes the XR16V554/554D, XR16V564/564D, and XR16V654/654D. All the devices share a common set of features including four independent UART channels, selectable TX and RX trigger levels and data rates up to 16 Mbps. In addition, the XR16V564/564D and XR16V654/654D has automatic sleep mode, automatic hardware flow control, automatic software flow control, a wireless infrared encoder/decoder and a fractional baud rate generator. The series is compliant with both the Intel and Motorola bus interfaces. The XR16V554/554D series are 16-byte FIFO devices, the XR16V564/564D series are 32-byte FIFO devices, and the XR16V654/654D series are 64-byte FIFO devices.

Seventh UART Launch in 2006
The XR16Vxx4 series marks Exar's seventh UART launch this year. In August 2006, Exar released the XR17V254 an industry-first quad-channel 66MHz PCI 3.0 compliant UART device and in July 2006 announced the low voltage (1.8V) XR16M and XR68M UART series. In June 2006, Exar released the XR16V2x5x series of 16Mbps dual UARTs in April 2006, Exar launched the UART and RS-232 combination, the XR19L2xx series; in February 2006, Exar released the XR17V252 a dual-channel 66MHz PCI 3.0 compliant UART, lastly, in January 2006, the Company introduced the high performance XR16V798.

"Exar continues to expand its product line in the high speed serial interface market with the XR16V554/V564/V654 series," said Rakesh Bhatia, strategic marketing manager, Interface Products. "For example the family has improved AC timing characteristics such as address/data set-up and hold times, chip select, read and write pulse widths. These devices meet tight timing constraints required in new designs and give customers a wider array of serial interface products to choose from."

Tools and Support
All devices in the series are supported by standard serial port software drivers for popular operating systems including Windows CE 4.2 and 5.0, Windows 2000, XP and Linux. With the availability of software drivers and Exar's application support hot line (uarttechsupport@exar.com), UART customers can greatly accelerate their product development cycle.
