True AC RMS Meter Responds in one AC Line Cycle, Datalogs Alarm Events over Ethernet



Costa Mesa, CA — Laurel Electronics, Inc. announces an upgraded version of its Laureate True AC RMS meter with high-speed response and Ethernet connectivity.



True RMS readings in 0-16 ms after completion of one input signal cycle allow power line anomalies to be detected and alarmed before they become expensive problems. Fast on/off control and alarm can be achieved with optional dual or quad relays, which can be mechanical or solid state. The meter can also capture peak and valley readings that occur at a rate of 50 or 60 Hz.



Ethernet connectivity is provided by an Ethernet interface board which plugs into the host 1/8 DIN digital panel meter. A 10/100Base-T Ethernet interface is via an industry-standard RJ45 connector. Multiple meters, each with its own Ethernet cable, can be connected to a local area network (LAN) or to the Internet via a router, or directly to a host computer via an Ethernet cable. Laurel’s XLog Datalogging Software can capture AC line anomalies over a local area network or the Internet.



LAN and Internet connectivity are supported in software so that the meter can be read and set up remotely. Node Manager Software shipped on a mini CD is used for discovery and setup of Laurel Nodes on a local area network. Web server software is also built into each Node and can be used to discover and configure Laurel Nodes over the Internet.



Reading accuracy is 0.1% of full scale for signals from DC to 10 kHz and signal amplitudes down to 0.1% of full scale. The crest factor (Vp/Vrms) is 3.0 at full-scale Vrms of 20,000 counts and a Vp of 60,000 counts for true RMS readings with heavily distorted waveforms.



High common mode rejection allows stable readings with current shunts located on the high side of the line. Five amp input capability allows the output of 5A current transformers to be applied directly to the meter, with no need for a stepdown transformer. The meter reading can be scaled from the front panel or remotely via software for different current transformer ratios. Digital filtering is user-selectable for noisy signals. Options include dual relays for control or alarm, isolated 4-20 mA and 0-10V analog outputs, and an RS232 or a dual-connector RS485 port for data communications with a host computer or PLC. Modbus RS485 is fully supported.



Laureate meters can be powered from 95-240 Vac ±10%, or optionally from 10-34 Vac or 10-48 Vdc. The five LED digits are available in red or green. The 1/8 DIN case meets NEMA 4X (IP65) specifications from the front when panel mounted. Any setup functions and front panel keys may be locked out for simplified usage and security.
