LVSP Fuses Offers Precise Mating to TVS Components

DES PLAINES, Illinois, April 13, 2004 - Littelfuse, Inc. (NASDAQ/NMS:LFUS) today announced the introduction of the Littelfuse Varistor Surge Protection (LVSP) fuse. LVSP fuses protect TVSS products and are designed to survive 8x20µs lightning surges as described in various standards (UL1449, IEC61000-4-5 & IEEE C62.41) without opening. This enables TVS devices such as varistors to perform necessary surge suppression as intended.

"The goal for a TVSS designer is to get full utilization out of the TVS component," said Brian Walaszczyk, Littelfuse Industrial Market Segment Manager. "Ideally, you want to match the overvoltage and overcurrent protection components as closely as possible so that that the MOV or SAD is used at capacity, while still allowing the fuse to protect the overvoltage component from 'shorting'."

The first set of LVSP fuses, now available, are rated for peak surge currents from 5 to 100 kA using the industry standard 8x2µSec waveform. The LVSP series is a UL recognized "MOV Protector Fuse" and as such is expected to aid TVSS system designers in gaining compliance with the UL 1449 standard for their "hard-wired" TVSS products. These include TVSS entrance panels, high capacity uninterruptible power supplies and devices that have integrated TVS functions such as motor controls and generators.

Walaszczyk added, "All TVSS systems must have fusing of some type. Often times a TVSS system designer will design his own solution using general purpose fusing components. The LVSP is precisely mated to the TVS component, allowing the design engineer to optimize functionality, cost and development time while increasing design performance.

Littelfuse offers a complimentary LVSP for popular ratings of each of the following series: HB34, HA, TMOV and iTMOV varistors. Littelfuse LVSP series fuses are currently UL Recognized for 5-80kA surge withstand with a 100kA version available for sampling.

The LVSP fuse will protect the TVSS by opening the Varistor circuit should it become shorted due to energy beyond its rating or thermal runaway due to an abnormal sustained overvoltage condition. The series has a maximum 200 kA interrupt rating at 600 VAC.
