Spectrographs incorporate holographic diffraction gratings.

Press Release Summary:

Hyperspec(TM) VS25 and VS50 concentric imaging spectrographs produce large, distortion-free images for high-resolution, low-noise applications. Hyperspec VS25 operates in 400-1,000 nm spectral region with 2-3 nm resolution. It is suited for homeland security, military reconnaissance, and environmental remote sensing. Offering process monitoring and quality control, Hyperspec VS50 operates from 900-1,700 nm with 10 nm resolution. Both include pre-aligned optics.

Headwall Photonics Expands Its Hyperspec(TM) Family of Compact, High-Resolution Imaging Spectrographs

Two New Products Feature High Spatial and Spectral Resolution for Remote Sensing and Industrial Inspection Systems

Fitchburg, Mass., April 12, 2004 - Headwall Photonics, a leader in nanophotonics manufacturing and spectrometry solutions for industry and defense, has expanded its Hyperspec(TM) family of concentric imaging spectrographs with the introduction of the Hyperspec VS25 and VS50. Both products incorporate the company's original holographic diffraction gratings and produce large, distortion-free images for high-resolution, low-noise applications. The concentric spectrograph design enables superb imaging over the full extent of an 18-mm tall slit, providing the highest spatial resolution available.

The Hyperspec VS25 combines unparalleled imaging capabilities with a rugged, field-proven design. Operating within the 400- to 1000-nm spectral region and featuring 2- to 3-nm spectral resolution, the VS25 provides a level of precision previously unavailable for air- and space-borne imaging platforms. It is ideal for integration into homeland security, military reconnaissance, and environmental remote sensing systems.

The Hyperspec VS50 is ideal for at-line or on-line industrial process monitoring and quality control, especially on moving webs of industrial product. It operates from 900 nm to 1700 nm with 10-nm spectral resolution. The VS50 performs non-contact, non-destructive, in-situ measurements of pharmaceutical, petrochemical, textile, and food products.

In addition, the flexible nature of the design and Headwall's patented diffraction grating technology allow the Hyperspec family of products to be customized for application-specific performance. The design flexibility also allows the use of many different CCD camera options with a range of performance attributes.

"With Headwall's patented, aberration-corrected optical design, customers have gravitated toward our Hyperspec family of products to take advantage of our spectral capabilities coupled with the reduced cost of CCD technology. With the introduction of these new products, Headwall continues to offer industry-leading hyperspectral performance at very compelling prices," said David Bannon, vice president of sales and marketing at Headwall Photonics. "Market feedback has been very positive. One of our customers actually referred to the VS25 as a million spectrographs within the size of a softball."

For easy integration, both the VS50 and VS25 feature pre-aligned optics and a robust housing that measures 5.0" x 6.0" x 4.0". Each spectrograph can be ordered with standard or custom mounting brackets for specific foreoptics, cameras, and flight-ready options to accommodate application-specific requirements.

All Headwall Photonics products can be custom-configured to meet nearly any application challenge, and its expert engineering team will provide rapid prototyping, modeling and collaborative product design assistance to accelerate time to market.

Headwall Photonics will exhibit its Hyperspec products at the SPIE Defense & Security Symposium, Booth #625, April 12 - 14, 2004.

Headwall Photonics leverages its expertise in nanophotonics manufacturing and engineering to produce a portfolio of spectrographs and optical subsystems for the analytical, life sciences, medical and pharmaceutical industries. The company was founded in 2003 after a management buyout of Agilent Technologies' Holographic Grating Operation, which originally existed as American Holographic prior to 2000. Aside from extensive design capabilities which allow for rapid prototyping, Headwall's products include application-specific single- and dual-beam spectrometers, custom "all original" holographic diffraction gratings, and high-performance imaging and non-imaging spectrographs. www.headwallphotonics.com
