SiP Modules target battery-constrained mobile devices.

Press Release Summary:

Based on Lite-Fi(TM) RS9110 802.11n SoC, SiP Modules integrate RF transceiver, power amplifier, EEPROM, and external front-end components. Units connect directly to antenna on line side, and to host processor through choice of SDIO, SPI, and EBI interfaces. SDIO interface permits data throughput of over 30 Mbps. With internal processor handling WLAN protocol functions and offloading layer-3 functions from host, modules enable WLAN functionality with little extra load on host processor.

Redpine Signals Releases 802.11n Single Stream SiP Modules for Mobile & Consumer Markets

Industry's first single and dual band fully certified 802.11abgn modules offering lowest power Wi-Fi connectivity in a highly integrated compact design

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 7 /- Redpine Signals, Inc., a leading developer of ultra low power multi-standard OFDM and MIMO silicon-based solutions for Wi-Fi(R), WiMAX(R) & 3GPP LTE, today announced that it has released to market a set of three Wi-Fi SiP modules based on its ultra low power Lite-Fi(TM) 802.11n technology. The modules offer a unique set of small form-factor and low-cost solutions for current and next generation battery constrained mobile handsets, digital still cameras, consumer electronics devices and industrial data communications.

The modules offer a complete 802.11n sub-system, integrating Redpine's Lite-Fi RS9110 802.11n SoC, a RF transceiver, power amplifier, EEPROM and external front-end components. They connect directly to an antenna on the line side, and to a host processor through a choice of SDIO, SPI and EBI interfaces. Working off a single 3.3V power supply and a flexible reference frequency, the modules present unprecedented ease of integration and enabling low system cost. The modules are accompanied by device drivers for Windows CE, XP and Linux operating systems. The Windows CE drivers comply with Microsoft Windows CE 5.0/6.0 Test Kit (CETK).

The modules include high performance host interfaces including a SDIO interface that permits data throughputs of over 30 Mbps. In addition, with the internal processor handling not only the WLAN protocol functions but also offloading cycle intensive layer-3 functions from the host (including TCP checksum and layer-3 security functions, such as 3DES, AES, RNG and SHA-1), the modules enable the provision of WLAN functionality with very little extra load on the host processor. The modules also provide mechanisms that carry out fast roaming from one AP to another -- even while in a network with enterprise mode security -- allowing the seamless handover of voice calls throughout a large office.

"With this launch, Redpine is providing pre-tested, pre-calibrated, low cost and ultra-low power modules addressing the emerging dual-band and 802.11n network device market," said Venkat Mattela, CEO of Redpine Signals. "Our RS9110-based design has been the world's first SDIO device to be Wi-Fi certified for the 802.11n draft 2.0 certification, along with WMM, WMM-PS and WPS. It is also among the first designs to be certified for Voice-Personal -- the Wi-Fi certification that helps ensure a satisfactory user experience for Voice over Wi-Fi applications. With the extraordinary growth of Wi-Fi usage in recent years, network administrators are intensively seeking ways to increase user density -- 802.11n and the use of the 5 GHz band are means by which this can be achieved," he added. "Our modules precisely address this need."

The family of modules include:

-- RS9110-N-11-01 (ultra-small ultra low power 802.11 b/g/n 9.5 mm by 7.5 mm module)

-- RS9110-N-11-02 (low-cost ultra low power 802.11b/g/n 13.7 mm by 12.9 mm module)

-- RS9110-N-11-03 (low cost ultra low power 2.4 and 5 GHz dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n 20 mm by 17.5 mm module).
