ABB Simplifies Active Optoelectronic Protective Devices with Orion Safety Light Curtains

New product from ABB Jokab Safety saves time and cost

MEMPHIS, Tenn., – Orion Safety Light Curtains, from ABB Jokab Safety Products, saves time in installation, set up and operation by offering a simplified selection of functions and settings.

Orion Safety Light Curtains are available in three models, each with a different light curtain or light grid configuration. These options, along with the choice of base and extended versions, provide a range with the flexibility to meet the needs of any application, without paying for features that aren’t needed.

A safety light curtain is a type of active optoelectronic protective device (AOPD) that emits and receives an optical beam, and signals a shutoff of the machine in response to the interruption of its beam from an object within the machine’s protected field.

While designed to have as few settings and functions as possible, Orion Safety Light Curtain base models offer AOPD object detection and a local reset button connected directly to the light curtain, which eliminates the need for a cable connection to the electrical cabinet or an extra control module. External device monitoring (EDM) enables actuator monitoring, also without an extra control module.

In addition to the features available with the base model, the extended model of the Orion Safety Light Curtain offers a muting feature, which enables material, including pallets, to pass through the curtain without stopping the machine, while still preventing personnel from entering the hazardous area.

“The new Orion Safety Light Curtain offers the industry a cost-effective and functional safety light curtain,” Richard A. Gibson, product manager at ABB Jokab Safety Products, said. “The base models include only the functionality needed, with extended versions available for complex and demanding applications.”

Orion safety light guards are available in finger- and hand-detection models (Orion 1), two-, three- or four-beam models (Orion 2), and transceiver light-grid models (Orion 3), which reduce wiring. A full range of accessories is also available, including mounting columns, mounting brackets, deviating mirrors and wash-down tubes with IP69K ratings for food and beverage processing applications.
