Porter-Cable's New Router Kits Combine Value and Precision
JUNE 20, 2002 - NEW YORK CITY, NY - Porter-Cable Corporation announced today the introduction of two new router kits - models 693VSPK and 9690VSK - during a press conference at New York City's Hotel InterContinental. "We've integrated our new variable speed router into two convenient cost-saving kits," said Product Manager Mark Woodlief. "Combining the latest router with a precision edge guide into a complete kit creates added value for both the professional woodworker and the practical hobbyist."
The model 693VSPK's unique design saves big money for woodworkers wanting both a plunge router and a standard router. It offers two routers in one. "It's simple," said Woodlief. "The fixed-base comes off and the plunge base slides right on." The 693VSPK truly takes the sacrifice out of choosing between a plunge router and standard unit thanks to the motor's unique interchangeability. In addition to the 1-3/4 horsepower variable speed motor, the kit includes a model 1001 fixed base, model 6931 plunge base, model 42690 router edge guide, plastic carrying case, a ¼" collet, a ½" collet, two collet wrenches, and an operator's manual. Available in mid-June, the model 693VSPK kit is expected to retail for approximately $249.
The model 9690VSK kit also includes the model 1001 fixed base, model 42690 router edge guide, plastic carrying case, a ¼" collet, a ½" collet, 2 collet wrenches, and an operator's manual - the same tools and accessories as the 693VSPK kit, without the plunge base. Also available in mid-June, the model 9690VSK kit expects to sell for approximately $189.
The most important element of both kits is the model 690LRVS router. This recently enhanced router is currently the most commonly sold professional router in the United States. Upgraded to 1-3/4 peak horsepower, this 11-amp unit features a variable speed range between 10,000 and 27,500-RPM motor.
"One of the most attractive features of the 690LRVS is its highly popular interchangeable base system," Woodlief said. "It is fully compatible with Porter-Cable's standard base, plunge base, D-handle base, and router table." The unit also features a lever base motor release for quick and convenient height adjustments and bit changes.
In addition to the model 690LRVS routers, Porter-Cable has included the model 42690 precision router edge guide in both kits. Unlike unstable edge guides attached to rods, Porter-Cable's edge guide offers smooth movement up and down and extruded, single-track assembly.
Both of the anodized aluminum edge guides feature a precise adjustment scale that moves in 1/16" increments for each complete turn of the knob. "The edge guides are precise, easily adjusted and compact - all important elements to users," Woodlief said.
Another important benefit of Porter-Cable's new edge guides is the ability to attach larger fence extensions to the existing fence. They also are compact enough to rout ¾" thick stock flat on a workbench. Porter-Cable's 6931 plunge base, included in the new 693VSPK router kit, offers a 2-1/2" plunge range with fully enclosed springs, a depth rod & 6-position step turret.
