TruPulse: Innovative New Pulsed Solid-State Laser from TRUMPF Optimized for Cutting and Welding Applications

FARMINGTON, Conn., September 13, 2006 - For decades, pulsed solid-state lasers have been used to weld and cut a wide range of components. They have become indispensable in industrial production. Now, TRUMPF introduces the TruPulse laser, a fully optimized successor to the successful line of TRUMPF's HL lasers. Development of the TruPulse stemmed from the increasing requirements users placed on the laser's capabilities. With the introduction of this new generation of pulsed solid-state lasers, TRUMPF meets these demands.

The TruPulse series is used in the automotive industry, for example, in the manufacture of sensors, actuators, and fuel injection components. Pulsed Nd:YAG lasers are also used in the production of consumer electronics, precision machined components, and medical devices-primarily to weld and cut instruments and implantable devices.

"Our lasers have proven themselves in various industries for more than 30 years. The new solid-state lasers combine that experience with the latest state of the art technology," explains Walter Haimerl, managing director, TRUMPF Inc. Laser Technology Center. "The laser models are optimized for the customer's individual requirements."

The TruPulse laser series features several technical innovations. The burst function allows the average power to be briefly exceeded and increases the pulse frequency - thereby reducing the welding cycle (e.g., applications requiring multiple spot welds). Quasi-continuous seam welds are possible with longer pulses of up to 50 milliseconds. This enables, for example, a closed circular seam to be welded with one single pulse by moving the component under the focusing optics. The maximum mean power and pulse energy, focusability and beam quality can be adjusted depending on the requirements of the application area. The laser enclosures are more compact and mobile than their predecessors. A removable touch-screen control panel with turn-push knob is a new feature to simplify setting output parameters. Improved real-time power control represents another impressive feature that provides very high pulse-to-pulse energy and power stability.

The finely tuned product range is based on a modular power supply structure. The new TruPulse solid-state laser's average power ranges from 20 to 150 watts at a maximum pulse power of up to 10 kilowatts. Within this range, beam qualities of 4 to 25 mm*mrad are possible. The lasers in this power class can all be supplied with an air cooled chiller or water/water heat exchanger. With up to six laser light cables, the laser can be used by several workstations.

Focused spot sizes from 50 to 300 um are possible due to the wide range of fiber optic cables available (i.e., 100 to 600 um) and processing optics. This feature used in conjunction with the laser's excellent beam quality provides an enhanced processing window.

With a selectable pulse width between 0.2 - 50 ms, and pulse energies from 0.2 - 90 joules, the user has maximum flexibility for a wide range of applications-from micro welding to joining of aluminum, stainless, platinum or nitinol. The excellent pulse stability resulting from TRUMPF's power feedback control and dynamic power supply technology allow precision welding of thin foil, fine wire, and thin walled tubing. TRUMPF TelePresence provides the option for service technicians to securely access the lasers for remote maintenance regardless of their location.

TRUMPF is one of the world's largest producers of fabricating machinery and a world market leader in lasers used for industrial production technology. Additional company information is available at: www.us.trumpf.com
