PPTC/Zener Diode Devices protect consumer electronics.

Press Release Summary:

Combining Zener diode and resettable PolySwitch PPTC device in 4.0 x 5.0 x 1.2 mm package, PolyZen ZEN056V230A16YC and ZEN056V260A16YC simultaneously protect against damage from overload, overcurrent, reverse-bias, ESD, and overtemperature events. Hybrid units offer up to 2.6 A hold-current at room temperature, ±30 kV ESD protection, and 8/20 µs pulse = 150 A overvoltage protection to help meet IEC standards. Applications include tablets, set-top boxes, hard disk drives, and DC power ports.

TE Connectivty's PolyZen YC Series Offers Integrated Protection for Consumer Electronics

Hybrid PolyZen PPTC/Zener Diode Devices Provide Space and Performance Advantages Over Discrete Solutions

MENLO PARK, Calif. – The new PolyZen YC device series now available from TE Connectivity’s Circuit Protection business unit offers an integrated approach to help protect consumer electronics, such as tablets, set-top boxes, hard disk drives and DC power ports, from damage caused by ESD (electrostatic discharge) and other electrical over-stress events that can lead to safety and warranty concerns. The new PolyZen ZEN056V230A16YC and ZEN056V260A16YC devices combine a precision Zener diode and a resettable PolySwitch PPTC (polymer positive temperature coefficient) device in a compact (4.0mm x 5.0mm x 1.2mm) package. A PolyZen device’s Zener diode is thermally connected to the PPTC device to enable rapid heat transfer, which in turn increases the PPTC device’s reaction time. As a result, a single hybrid PolyZen YC device is able to simultaneously protect against damage from overvoltage, overcurrent, reverse-bias, ESD and overtemperature events more effectively than solutions using multiple discrete devices.

The PolyZen YC devices are suitable for enhancing reliability in sensitive electronics by offering up to 2.6A hold-current at room temperature. They also provide high-performance ESD protection (+/- 30kV) and overvoltage protection (8/20 microsecond pulse: 150A) to help meet IEC standards (IEC 61000-4-2 and IEC 61000-4-5). One PolyZen YC device can help provide increased protection capabilities over typical discrete approaches that use fuses or PPTC, TVS (transient voltage suppression) or OVP (overvoltage protection) devices, either individually or combined.

“As an integrated protection solution, PolyZen YC devices help enable single-component implementation, with all the advantages of more efficient production optimized for SMT lines, reduced board space, lower parts costs and faster time to market,” said Jin Xu, Product Manager, TE Circuit Protection. “In addition to their space-saving advantages, they provide high-performance protection to help designers comply with the IEC safety requirements.”
