Micrel Launches Latest Low Cost, Low Power PHYs to Support Hottest Trends in Consumer Electronics

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 9 /-- Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ:MCRL), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today announced the KSZ8041TL and KSZ8041FTL, the Company's latest PHY solutions designed for the rapidly growing Consumer Electronics Market applications. The KSZ8041TL/FTL are follow-on parts from the successful launch of the KSZ8041NL PHY in the third quarter of 2006. The KSZ8041TL/FTL offer additional features such as HP Auto MDIX, back-to-back and fiber modes, as well as cable diagnostics in a 48-pin TQFP package. The KSZ8041TL/FTL are currently sampling with volume quantities available in the first quarter of 2007. For specific pricing, please contact your local Micrel sales office.

"The global Ethernet market has continued to gather momentum as more and more Consumer Electronic-related products are networked together in triple- play applications. Micrel's latest Ethernet PHYs, with their small package size and Industry's leading power consumption, are increasingly used in IP- Set-top boxes (STB), IP-TVs and VoIP applications, to name but a few," said Grahame Cooney, director, Micrel Ethernet group.

The KSZ8041TL/FTL are fully compliant with the IEEE 802.3u specification. The devices are packaged in a compact 9mm x 9mm, 48-pin TQFP package and offer industry's lowest power consumption at 180mW. On the media side, the KSZ8041TL supports 10Base-T and 100Base-TX copper with HP auto MDI/MDI-X for reliable detection of and correction for straight-through and crossover cables. The KSZ8041FTL supports 100-Base-FX and can be combined with either a KSZ8041NL or KSZ8041TL device in a back-to-back MII mode to form a very low cost media converter solution. The KSZ8041TL/FTL offer a choice of MII, RMII, or SMII data interface connections to a MAC processor. Both devices offer LinkMD(R) for detecting common cabling plant problems, such as open and short circuits and far-end fault detection, thereby reducing overall system cost.
