Sipex Introduces First Photo Detector IC for 16x DVD-Write Drives

(Milpitas, CA - March 18, 2004) - - Sipex Corporation (NASDAQ: SIPX), a leading provider of high performance, analog integrated circuits (ICs), today announced the SP8062, its first photo detector IC (PDIC) specially engineered to support 16x DVD-writable drives. This new PDIC combines the versatility of ten gain levels spanning a 42dB range with the high RF bandwidth critical for 16x write requirements. The SP8062 includes 4 high-speed data detection channels, 4 tracking channels, and 2 differential summing channels. Other product features include 130MHz RF bandwidth, 20ns fast saturation recovery, 400V/us slew rate, and a low-power sleep mode.

"The 16x DVD write drives offer the highest write speed in the single-layer DVD segment which is expected to have a much longer life cycle, until the adoption of the Blu-ray technology," said Kevin Plouse, senior vice president of marketing and business development at Sipex. "The SP8062 and our other upcoming 16x-optimized optics products should provide Sipex with a stable market for the next couple of years."
