Sipex Introduces Photo Detector IC for Super Multi DVD Drives

The SP8058 PDIC receiver combines 11 gain modes and Super Multi support in a slim form factor package

(Milpitas, CA - September 21, 2004) - Sipex Corporation (NASDAQ: SIPX) today announced its latest photo detector IC, the SP8058, which was designed to support the growing trend toward "Super Multi" DVD-writable drives. Super Multi DVD drives support all major types of DVD recordable media: DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM. In the SP8058, a proprietary photo detector array, which has been optimized for holographic lasers, captures laser light and drives 4 high-speed data detection channels, 2 medium-speed channels and 2 slow channels. The SP8058 is offered in a small 3.5mm x 4.0mm package, enabling convenient implementation in slim and ultra-slim form factor drives. Product features include eleven selectable gain settings, two 130MHz differential data summing outputs and a low-power sleep mode for power conservation in portable applications.

SP8058 Key Features (Typical):
o 130MHz bandwidth
o Eleven selectable gain settings
o 1mA sleep mode current
o 10ns output settling time
o <20ns saturation recovery time
o Differential outputs with 2.7v output swing
o <1ns group delay
o -73dBm output noise
o 16 pin clear OPLGA packaging, 3.5mm x 4.0mm

Pricing and Availability
The SP8058 is available now and is priced at $1.55 in 100,000 piece quantities. An evaluation board is also available to assist in the evaluation of the SP8058.
