Broadcom Introduces New Line of Optical Transport Framer/PHYs

Industry's Lowest Power and Smallest Footprint Devices Cut Power Consumption in Half(1)

ANAHEIM, Calif., -- OFC/NFOEC Technical Conference 2013 --

News Highlights:

--  New series enables high-density packet transport over Ethernet LAN, WAN and OTN networks

--  Includes 20G, 40G and 120G device options

--  Powerful combination of mixed signal and digital processing technology in a single device

Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today announced a new line of Optical Transport Networking (OTN) Framer physical layer transceivers (PHYs). The BCM845xx Series offers the industry's highest level of integration and the lowest power per port, allowing system providers to reduce overall BOM costs(2), while meeting increasing performance and density demands in LAN, WAN and OTN carrier networks. For more news, visit Broadcom's Newsroom.

The wealth of bandwidth-hungry multimedia applications and services is driving demand for high-capacity, packet-based networking. Users are utilizing more dynamic services than ever before, and as more applications are moved to the cloud, new network traffic patterns are placing an ever-increasing demand on existing architectures. To meet this demand, system vendors are seeking higher density, lower power and multi-service support devices that are optimized to enable the next generation of high performance converged networks.

"We anticipate breakout growth for this segment as carriers continue to embrace and deploy OTN. According to our recent report, OTN transport and switching equipment will be nearly a $13B market by 2017," said Andrew Schmitt, Principal Analyst for Optical at Infonetics Research.

The BCM845xx Series features three device options including the BCM84520 20G version, the BCM84540 40G version and the BCM84512 120G version. Each device offers a powerful combination of mixed signal and digital processing functionality including high-speed PHY, Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC), clock synthesis, jitter-filtering phase lock loops (PLLs) and selectable Forward Error Correction (FEC) codes. Comprehensive application coverage enables interoperability between different network operators and system equipment vendors.

"Telecom system vendors look to Broadcom for the solutions necessary to manage the exponential increase in traffic driven by video and other high bandwidth multimedia applications," said Lorenzo Longo, Broadcom Vice President and General Manager, Physical Layer Products (PLP). "Built on our field-proven 10G/40G Ethernet PHY technology, our new line of multicore Framer/PHYs combines the higher density, lower power and unprecedented level of integration required to enable the next wave of optical transport networks."

Industry's Broadest Portfolio for Optical Transport

A leading provider of optical transport solutions that enable high-capacity, carrier-grade routers and switches, Broadcom is paving the way to 100G long-haul optical networks with an end-to-end portfolio of switching fabrics and physical layer technology.

Availability

The BCM854xx Series, including multiple device options, is now sampling with volume production slated for Q2 2013. See Broadcom's complete portfolio of optical networking solutions at OFC/NFOEC booth #1052.
