Sunrise Telecom® Launches Additional Module for the Micro OTDR; Four Important Test Functions in One Lightweight, Handheld Unit

Sunrise Telecom's modular platform, which can be seen at OFC 2006 March 7-9 in Booth 1715 in Anaheim, Calif., offers OTDR, VFL, OPM, and LS in a single module for the installation and maintenance of fiber optic cable.

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 7 / -- Extending its technical leadership in Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs), Sunrise Telecom® Incorporated (Pink Sheets: SRTI.PK), a leader in testing and monitoring solutions for voice, video, data services and next-generation digital multimedia, today launched the SSMTT-35E module for its industry- leading SunSet® Modular Test Toolkit (MTT) handheld platform. With the addition of a light source and an optical power meter to the 1310/1550 nm OTDR, the fourth module in the SSMTT-35 product line delivers accurate insertion loss measurements and provides a visual fault locator for finding fiber anomalies such as breaks or macrobending that can disrupt service. By combining the Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), Visual Fault Locator (VFL), Optical Power Meter (OPM), and Light Source (LS) test functions into a single unit, this new module delivers significant cost-savings to companies who previously had to purchase individual handheld devices for each type of test function.

"Our enterprise, telecom and CATV customers continue to aggressively install more fiber throughout their corporate and access networks. These installations typically create unique and demanding installation and maintenance scenarios," said David Chan, senior product manager at Sunrise Telecom. "The SSMTT-35E is an extremely flexible product that meets these current needs and can be adapted as technologies change and develop."

The SSMTT-35 Micro OTDR Module is a rugged, battery-operated handheld test solution designed specifically for the installation and maintenance of fiber optic cable. It is the first in its class to provide an optical time domain reflectometer in a compact module that measures fiber optic cables for events such as connectors, splices, breaks, and insertion loss. The modules test single-mode and multi-mode fibers. Even in such a compact platform, advanced features such as dual wavelength testing, and auto and manual mode configuration are standard.

The SSMTT-35E module is interchangeable with the SSMTT-35A, -35C, and - 35D, allowing companies to purchase the modules meeting their immediate needs while being assured they can expand test capabilities in the future with a minimal investment. The one-button 'Auto Mode' configuration and measurement makes the system one of the easiest to use in the market, simplifying and shortening the time required to complete tests. Characterization includes event location and other anomaly detection for the fiber under test. The OTDR dynamic range allows technicians to test up to 100 kilometers at 1550 nm, meeting virtually every test scenario encountered with telecom, CATV, data storage, FTTx and PONS fiber optic networks.
