ASTM International Training Samples Crude Oil in Training Course

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.-The increased price of crude oil emphasizes the importance of its accurate and efficient sampling. "Crude Oil: Sampling, Testing and Evaluation," a technical and professional training course sponsored by ASTM International, focuses on obtaining representative samples using automatic and manual methods; the tests available for obtaining data for determining quantity for custody transfer purposes and conformance to expected quality; and making a rapid evaluation of the commodity to assess handling and processing characteristics.

Laboratory technicians and chemists responsible for crude oil analysis and field personnel responsible for collecting samples will benefit from the course. A minimum of two years of college with an emphasis on chemistry or environmental science or relevant laboratory work experience is recommended.

The course instructor is Harry N. Giles, retired senior petroleum industrial specialist for the U.S. Department of Energy. Giles also serves as technical advisor to ASTM International for the Crude Oil Interlaboratory Crosscheck Program (ILCP).

The course will be held twice in 2011: April 18-20 in New Orleans, La., and Nov. 14-16 in Houston, Texas.

The class attendance fee is $1195 USD and includes course notes, 32 ASTM International standards referenced in the course and refreshment breaks. Students also receive 1.4 continuing education units.
