Kontron to Give Video Operators 20 Percent More Channel Density on Next Generation x86 GPU-Accelerated SYMKLOUD Series

New Kontron modular servers to support recently launched Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1200 v4 product family, now with integrated Intel® Iris™ Pro graphics P6300

•Â Higher graphics density for greater rack-level performance

•Â Intel Media Server SDK enables ease of development

•Â Run complex analytics on unassigned CPUs

•Â Improved HEVC / 4K performance - ready today

Augsburg, GERMANY — Kontron, a leading supplier of embedded computing technology (ECT), announced today the introduction of next generation SYMKLOUD modular servers featuring processors from the Intel® Xeon® E3-1200 v4 family. This will provide up to 20% more channel density for video transcoding ISVs who seek to market ultra-high-density converged modular solutions to regional and global providers of cloud-based mobile and fixed video delivery services.

Performance enhancements from the integrated Intel® Iris™ Pro graphics P6300 and Integrated Intel® Quick Sync Video are expected to enable telecom, cable and digital TV broadcasters to push the delivery envelope with more than 4300 HD (1080p, 30 fps) simultaneous live or ‘on-demand’ video streams in a single rack using 20 SYMKLOUD platforms (assume remaining 2U for TOR switch). At the platform level, a single 2U / 21-inch deep SYMKLOUD will typically support up to 180 HD 1080p, 30 fps streams, and is now expected to achieve up to 216 HD streams with the Intel E3-1200 v4 processor, an increase that leads to a significant advantage in channel density, a reduced footprint, and lower operating expenses.

By implementing a GPU framework to process video, more CPU units are available to run simultaneous tasks, such as data analytics that measure, analyze, and interpret streaming content. The performance increases achieved by the tight integration of compute and graphics in the same processor also help further reduce power consumption and accelerate data treatment. A growing ecosystem of ISVs and industry partners are leveraging the Intel® Media Server Studio to simplify their media application development on the Intel processor graphics and enable hardware assisted encode and decode, on either Linux or Windows.

The SYMKLOUD Series integrates infrastructure level compute, storage and redundant front-access 1GbE and 10GbE switches, and is the comprehensive high density platform to launch cloud-based and virtualized multiscreen video delivery services. A single 2U SYMKLOUD platform may be configured with up to 18 sockets of the Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1200 v4, each with dedicated memory and storage, across 9 hot-swappable, modular servers.

The current media data explosion caused by advances in end user devices, higher resolutions, frame rates and color depth is forcing service providers to efficiently improve workflow densities while still reducing infrastructure costs. This equally applies to upcoming roll-outs of 4K video services. While SYMKLOUD converged modular servers can support broadcast quality HEVC (H.265) / 4K video streams using existing Intel CPU/GPU implementations, today, Kontron plans for further enhancements with the introduction of Intel E3-1200 v4 processor series.
