Rockwell Automation Launches Next Generation of Allen-Bradley Smart Motor Controllers



New intelligent controllers offer expanded functionality and enhanced diagnostics in a modular, compact design

MILWAUKEE, November 14, 2001 - To provide users with increased motor performance and greater flexibility and functionality, complete automation leader Rockwell Automation introduces new Allen-Bradley Smart Motor Controllers - the Bulletin 150 SMC-3(TM) and SMC-Delta(TM) Smart Motor Controllers. Providing integrated features and advanced functionality previously unavailable in a compact 45 mm housing, the SMC-3 and SMC-Delta controllers offer users flexible, cost-efficient solutions for a wide range of motor control applications.

The Allen-Bradley SMC-3's soft-starting technology enables superior intelligence in a compact, 45 mm footprint. This true three-phase controlling device includes standard electronic overload protection with adjustable trip class, advanced motor and system diagnostics, configurable auxiliary contacts, and multiple start and stop modes. Typical applications for the SMC-3 include compressors, fans, chillers, lifts, pumps and crushers.

The SMC-3 controller is designed for maximum control of standard squirrel-cage induction motors. Overload protection options include a choice of trip classes (10, 15, 20, or OFF) and selectable overload reset (manual or automatic). Fault diagnostics cover over-temperature, phase loss/load loss, phase reversal conditions, phase imbalance and shorted silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs). DIP switches allow easy, precise, and secure setting of the start/stop profile, overload trip class, and auxiliary contact characteristics.

The Allen-Bradley SMC-Delta is a reduced voltage starter for star-delta (6-lead motor) applications, incorporating a transitionless start and requiring only one-third of the
panel space of a traditional electromechanical starter. The starter combines contactors, overload relays, timers, and internal power and control wiring into a single product with a
compact footprint, making installation quick and easy. The SMC-Delta includes six motor winding terminations, eliminating the need for major wiring changes to upgrade existing applications.

The SMC-Delta offers simplified wiring and easy setup and maintenance for star-delta motors. Designed for flexibility and modularity, the SMC-Delta allows one device to be configured for many applications. Typical applications for the SMC-Delta include
compressors, fans, chillers, lifts, pumps and crushers.
