Imaging System focuses laser onto work surface.

Press Release Summary:

CIA coaxial imaging accessory consists of high-resolution CCD camera and AR-coated optics. It mates to any fiber-coupled diode laser to provide direct on-axis, fixed-focus imaging of laser beam at work surface. Coaxial view of laser beam eliminates parallax errors associated with off-axis imaging and ensures precise placement of laser beam. Applications include laser soldering, marking, welding, heat treating and adhesive curing.

Coherent Semiconductor Division Develops Imaging System for Automated High-Volume Diode Laser Processing

Santa Clara, Calif., January 22, 2002 - Coherent, Inc., Semiconductor Division (CSD) (Nasdaq: COHR) has developed a Coaxial Imaging Accessory (CIA), ideal for integration into automated, high-volume laser processing applications.

The CIA is a rugged, compact and lightweight on-axis imaging accessory that consists of a high-resolution CCD camera and specialized AR-coated optics, it can mate up to any high-power fiber-coupled diode laser via its SMA 905 connector. The CIA provides direct on-axis, fixed-focus imaging of the laser beam at the work surface. The camera imaging accessory is well suited for integration into automated machine gantry systems being employed in high-volume production direct-diode laser soldering, marking, welding, heat treating and adhesive curing.

The coaxial, or "direct view", of the laser beam eliminates the parallax errors associated with off-axis imaging and ensures precise placement of the laser beam.

The CIA can be specified with either a color or monochrome CCD camera. The 1/2"-type CCD camera has 768 x 494 effective pixels, a horizontal resolution of 570 TV lines and a 60 dB S/N ratio. The typical field of view is approximately 0.4" (H) x 0.6" (V), but can be changed to suit to the customer's application. Composite and component video outputs are also available. A single signal cable interfaces the camera and provides power to the unit.

Specified fiber delivery is 800 micrometer (<0.22 NA) with a greater than 90 percent throughput efficiency.

Founded in 1966, Coherent, Inc. is a Standard & Poor's SmallCap 600 company and a world leader in providing photonics-based solutions to the commercial, scientific, and telecom markets.
