Zeus to Launch High-Temperature NeoTem(TM) and PEEK Fiber Optic Coatings at Photonics West

ORANGEBURG, SC - Zeus, a global leader in the extrusion of high-performance polymer solutions, unveiled two new high-temperature polymer coatings for fiber optic technology at the SPIE Photonics West trade show in San Francisco February 10-12.

Zeus NeoTem™ coated optical fiber is a high temperature shield (300° C) that is chemically inert and offers improved permeation resistance to CH4, O2, CO2 and water. Zeus initially introduced its extruded products made from NeoTem™ as a solution for the oil industry at last year’s Offshore Technology Conference in Houston.  Oil and gas engineers needed a polymer able to retain its mechanical integrity in high-thermal environments such as steam assisted gravity drainage systems. Through extensive research, Zeus has developed processes to extrude ECCtreme® ECA 3000 by DuPont™---the first perfluoroplastic that breaks the maximum temperature threshold of 260° C/500° F—into tubing, heat shrinkable tubing, insulated wire, drawn fiber and now, fiber optic coating.

Zeus has also released a PEEK coated fiber. The coating offers abrasion and chemical resistance, a high temperature shield (260° C) and is radiation resistant.

“More industries are relying on fiber optics for communication and sensing, as well as a host of other growing applications,” notes Rob Hall, vice president of engineered extrusions at Zeus. “NeoTem™ and PEEK are just part of the array of coating options Zeus offers to make fibers more robust in applications that require mechanical strength, radiation or abrasion resistance.”

Zeus has also developed processes to coat fiber optics with PFA, ETFE and PVDF polymers, which enhance the fibers’ ability to withstand harsh temperatures and chemical environments. These coating options give engineers and designers an array of options to better serve their industries—including oil and gas, aerospace, medical and automotive—creating an ideal synergy between productivity and costs savings.
