Pentadyne's 'Next Generation' Flywheel Power System Provides Higher Power Performance for UPS Applications



Chatsworth, Calif.-- October 25, 2005-- Pentadyne announces the VSS+ --the next generation of its advanced Voltage Support Solution (VSS) flywheel power system -- designed to improve overall Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems reliability by completely replacing or greatly extending the life of lead-acid batteries. The VSS+ provides increased high-power performance added to the high reliability, low maintenance and a long useful life that characterized its predecessor the VSS. Additionally, the VSS+ provides significant cost savings in parallel system applications up to 1000 kVA and beyond. For instance, only four VSS+ units are required to supply back-up power to a 750 kVA UPS for 17 seconds. Target markets for the Pentadyne VSS+ include the full spectrum of companies serving the digital economy, industrial plants, healthcare buildings, broadcast facilities and other commercial structures.

Providing the same physical footprint, dimensions and weight characteristics as the proven first-generation system, the VSS+ offers an even greater measure of application flexibility when used as a UPS battery system replacement or supplement. Ride-through Protection--integrated with a UPS, the VSS+ provides sufficient ride-through for a safe system shutdown of most process operations. A single VSS+, for example, can provide 13 seconds of ride-through for a 225 kVA UPS at 100% output, more than ample time for 99.5% of power disturbances which are only a few cycles to a few seconds duration.

Ride-through to Generator--the VSS+ provides sufficient ride-through until a standby engine-generator can come on-line to protect against long-term grid outages.

Battery-life Extension--in parallel with UPS batteries, the VSS+ handles short-duration power disturbances, thus preserving battery capacity for longer events and extending battery life, reducing life-cycle costs while improving UPS reliability.
The VSS+ integrates indifferently with medium and large power UPS systems. At 100% UPS output power, a single VSS+ unit provides up to 25 seconds in a 130 kVA UPS and 40 seconds in a 80 kVA UPS. For large power UPS systems, as many VSS+ systems as desired can be paralleled together for higher power, longer run-time or redundancy without requiring any communication links.
