Fixed Gain of 2 Amplifier Has Differential Inputs & Outputs

MILPITAS, CA - June 4, 2003 - Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC1992-2, a new class of fully differential input and output amplifier with a fixed gain of two. The LTC1992-2 provides significant performance improvement over discrete op amp solutions for driving differential signals in precision instrumentation applications where stability with time and temperature is critical.

The LTC1992-2 has high stability internal gain setting resistors that provide a fixed gain of two with better than ±0.3% gain accuracy over -40°C to 85°C temperature range and phenomenal long-term stability. This eliminates the need for expensive precision, external gain setting resistors, thus reducing cost and component count compared to discrete solutions.

Design manager Nello Sevastopoulos observes, "The LTC1992-2 has an adjustable output common mode voltage independent of the input common mode voltage. This feature makes level shifting of signals easy, allows driving single supply ADCs with dual supply signals and accommodates applications where the differential signals along the signal path have various common mode voltage levels. Further, the internal architecture of the LTC1992-2 uses separate feedback paths for the differential signal and common mode signal. This results in outstanding output gain and phase balancing, better common mode noise rejection and reduced second order harmonics".

The LTC1992-2 is ideal for driving differential signals over long lines without losing precision. It is stable for capacitive loads up to 10,000pF and operates on single or dual supplies ranging from 2.7V to 12V total. The device features rail-to-rail differential inputs with a common mode level ranging from the negative supply up to 1.3V from the positive supply. Rail-to-rail outputs sink and source 10mA.

The LTC1992-2 is available in the 8-pin MSOP package and is characterized over the commercial and industrial temperature ranges. Pricing starts at $3.95 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
