Avanex Unveils PowerBit(TM) 10-12.5 Gb/s NRZ External Modulator, First to Reach 120 km without Dispersion Compensation

FREMONT, Calif., Feb 22 - Avanex Corporation (NASDAQ:AVNX), today announced the introduction of its PowerBit(TM) F2000 10-12.5 Gb/s Lithium Niobate chirped intensity external modulator, which features an innovative and distinctive chirp mechanism capable of extending the reach of uncompensated signal transmission to 120 kilometers (over single-mode fiber at 2000 ps/nm).

Conventional modulators such as intrinsically chirped single-drive z-cut modulators have the potential for uncompensated signal transmission only up to 80 to 100 kilometers.

"This low-cost solution reaching 120 kilometers with standard NRZ transmitter technology is the ideal partnership with customers' existing transponder design," Dr. Giovanni Barbarossa, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President, Active Components said. "First on the market, this unique external modulator enables a further extension of 10 Gb/s metro regional applications."

The new Avanex F2000 external modulator is built on standard manufacturing platforms and is designed for four-inch transponders. It is fully compatible with existing Avanex modulators and can easily replace such modulators in existing transponder designs, upgrading a standard transponder to an advanced 120-kilometer extended metro application at a very low cost. The product retains all of the features of prior products, including high power-handling capabilities. This combination of features enables uncompensated 10 Gb/s transmission over the "extended metro" distance at an attractive cost.

With this new chirp technology, Avanex now offers a broad Lithium Niobate external modulator portfolio to address customer specific requirements for 10 Gb/s transmission. Besides outstanding zero-chirp modulators, the portfolio includes chirped modulators for different reaches that outperform competitor's z-cut modulators in conventional applications up to 100 kilometers and even extend the reach to 120 kilometers.
