Legrand® Drives Electrical Load Management and Compliance with New Receptacles

Pass & Seymour® Plug Load Controllable Receptacles deliver code compliance, specifier confidence and energy savings

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Legrand, a leading provider of electrical wiring devices and home systems, today announced the availability of its new Pass & Seymour® Plug Load Controllable Receptacles.

The face of the new receptacles is pad printed with the universally recognized power symbol, which remains clearly visible after installation. This complies with the requirements of the 2014 National Electrical Code® Section 406.3 (E). It also meets the conditions of ASHRAE Energy Efficiency Standard 90.1: Section 8.4.2 and California Title 24 Part 6, effective July 1, 2014, both of which specify the requirement to permanently mark which outlets on receptacles are controlled.

Some companies with competing products currently available either offer stickers to be field applied to the wall plate or other areas of the controlled receptacle outlet or are not marking their devices at all with the power symbol.

“Having the power symbol permanently and prominently stamped on the face of Pass & Seymour® Plug Load Controllable Receptacles provides certainty to specifiers that our product meets all relevant codes and standards and will pass relevant electrical inspections,” said Kevin Kohl, commercial product manager at Pass & Seymour, Legrand Electrical Wiring Systems. “In addition, contractors can also install our product with the utmost confidence that they will not have to deal with callbacks because they have incorrectly marked or labeled a wall plate in the field. They also do not need to worry that the correct wall plate with the proper label is in the appropriate mounting position to denote which half of the receptacle is to be controlled. This also facilitates contractor productivity.”

The new receptacles are installed on a circuit and their electrical loads are managed by and compatible with a number of building control solutions, including WattStopper’s® Digital Lighting Management system. These building control systems automatically shut off and turn on the controllable portions of the receptacles at predetermined times.

“This will boost energy efficiency, generate utility savings and meet all relevant code requirements,” adds Kohl.

Plug Load Controllable Receptacles target the commercial office, education and hospitality markets.

Two types are available in both duplex and decorator configurations with 15A and 20A, 125V ratings. The half-controlled version features a factory-broken split-circuit tab that allows half the receptacle to be controlled.  A clearly marked trim ring shows that one of the two receptacles is controlled. The dual-controlled version has a trim ring that shows both receptacles are controlled. The controlled receptacle markings are NEMA-approved and are pad printed on the receptacle face.

Both versions are commercial spec grade receptacles and comply with UL498 and Federal Specification WC-596 requirements.  They feature an auto-ground clip that assures a positive ground and tri-drive steel terminal and mounting screws and an internal screw-pressure-plate with side wire capability. Two back wire holes deliver greater wiring flexibility and .032 inch thick, brass, triple-wipe power contacts provide lasting retention. Two drive screws anchor the strap to the back of the receptacles’ body and face where abrupt removal torque is at its strongest. A corrosion-resistant, plated steel strap is locked into the face and back body of the receptacle to strengthen it and resist any pulling away from the face/body assembly.

Pass & Seymour® Plug Load Controllable Receptacles are available in white, light almond, ivory, gray, black, brown, red and blue and are on sale across the United States and Canada.
