ON Semiconductor Introduces Two New Multi-Topology DC-DC Regulators for a Variety of Consumer Electronics Applications

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Nov. 15, 2006 - ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN) has introduced two new multi-topology dc-dc regulators that offer the design flexibility of buck, boost or voltage inverting configuration. The NCP3063 and NCP3163 extend the performance of the industry standard MC34063 device, by operating at higher switching frequencies, delivering higher output current and incorporating new protection features. These regulators are ideal for many applications in consumer electronic such as printers, DSL modems and WAN/LAN.

The new devices are drop-in replacements for the MC34063 - which has become ubiquitous in step-down (buck), step-up (boost), and voltage-inverting applications utilizing hysteretic control architecture. Compared to the MC34063, the NCP3063 increases the switching frequency from 50 kilohertz (kHz) to 150 kHz. This reduces the size of the required output capacitor from 470 microfarads (µF) to 47 µF, and the output inductor from 220 microhenry (µH) to 47 µH. The resulting circuit requires about one-half the board space of designs operating at lower switching frequencies, and enables the use of surface mount components if desired.

The NCP3163 further extends the performance of the family by increasing the switching frequency to 300 kHz. This results in a further reduction of board space and component cost. This device also produces a peak output current of 3.4 amps (A) - whereas the MC34063 produces a maximum peak output of only 1.5 A. The higher peak output of the NCP3163 enables a cost effective and flexible design approach that can be scaled to higher current applications.

Both devices include a new internal thermal shutdown with hysteresis and a cycle-by-cycle current limit. These protection features prevent catastrophic failures such as a short on the output from permanently destroying the device or the load. The NCP3063 and NCP3163 are qualified for Standard Temperature (0 °C to +70 °C). The NCP3063B and NCP3163B are qualified for Industrial Temperature (-40 °C to +85 °C). ON Semiconductor also offers the NCV3063 and NCV3163 - multi-topology dc-dc regulators qualified for Automotive Temperature (-40 °C to +125 °C).

Packaging and Pricing
The NCP3063 is pin-to-pin compatible with the MC34063A and MC33063A, and is available in Pb-free SOIC-8 and Pb-free PDIP-8 packages. It is priced at $0.29 per unit in 1,000-unit quantities. A new Pb-free DFN-8 package will also be released soon.

The NCP3163 is available in Pb-free SOIC-16 and Pb-free DFN-18 packages. It is priced at $1.20 per unit in 1,000-unit quantities.

Both devices will also be offered in DFN packages to improve the thermal performance resulting in increased average output current.
