Emerson Network Power Presents New Range of Configurable Power Supplies that Matches Performance of Custom Multi-output Power Supplies

Visitors to the Emerson Network Power stand at Electronica are invited to test the performance of their custom power supply against its latest ìMP and iMP devices

Munich, Germany. - Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity(TM), today presented at Electronica a range of configurable power supplies that can match the performance of equivalent multi-output custom power supplies. The ìMP, iMP and iVS families on show at Electronica are part of the range of medium to high power supplies from the Embedded Power business of Emerson Network Power, and cover the power load range up to 3 kW and DC voltage outputs up to 60 V.

Emerson Network Power's iMP and iVS power supplies offer the user the flexibility to change output voltage and current through simple programmed configuration settings, without any hardware change. The entry-level ìMP range can be configured to the user's specifications before shipping. In each case, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can alter power outputs quickly and easily without incurring engineering costs or adding design time.

Configurability normally imposes a trade-off in efficiency or power density. But the advanced design of the ìMP, iMP and iVS devices means that they can match the performance of custom multi-output supplies, while freeing the OEM from the limitation of fixed-specification, inflexible hardware.

Chris Jones, marketing director of the Embedded Power business of Emerson Network Power, said, "This latest generation of power supplies has crossed the performance threshold such that multi-output custom designs no longer offer any material performance advantage over the off-the-shelf configurable equivalent. So confident are we in our configurable power supplies that we are asking visitors to our
stand at Electronica 2010 (B2.461) to take our Custom v. Configurable Challenge. If they bring their custom multi-output power supply design to the stand, we will show them a configurable power supply that can match its specifications in terms of efficiency, power output and density."

The most recent addition to Emerson Network Power's line of configurable power supplies is the ìMP1. The low-profile, 1U (1.57 inch; 39.89 mm) ìMP1 has six available expansion slots, allowing engineers to mix-and-match modules for up to 12 outputs ranging from 0.9 V to 60 V. It offers a power density of 13.9 W per cubic inch and operating efficiency of up to 91 percent typical at full case load. The case can deliver up to 1,200 W of output power with no minimum load requirement. The ìMP1 accepts a wide input voltage range of 85 Vac to 264 Vac and is equipped with active power factor correction rated at 0.99 typical to minimize input harmonic current distortion.
