Co-Polyester Films suit medical device packaging applications.

Press Release Summary:

Meeting needs of medical form-fill-seal and tray applications, Pentamed® MD-EK10R00 Films protect sterilized contents against damage and breach of sterile barriers. High glass-transition temperature allows for heat resistance that slows aging while speeding validation and sterilization. Sterilization chamber temperatures are not limited by package so there is minimized risk of warping and sticking. For every 10°C increase in EtO chamber temperature, sterilization time can be cut in half.

Klöckner Pentaplast Introduces Pentamed® MD-EK10R00 High-Performance Co-Polyester Films

Gordonsville, Virginia - The Pentamed® film product line has been extended to include Pentamed® MD-EK10R00 high-performance rigid co-polyester films for medical device packaging applications. This unique and innovative film solution fills an unmet need in the industry for increased toughness and temperature performance for demanding medical form-fill-seal and tray applications. Ideal for packaging heavy medical equipment and frozen products, Pentamed® MDEK10R00 films are available worldwide from Klöckner Pentaplast.

Pentamed® MD-EK10R00 films have a high glass-transition temperature which allows for heat resistance that slows aging and speeds validation and sterilization. With these films, quicker accelerated-aging protocols are possible as faster and more reliable shelf-life qualification can reduce time, labor, and speed-to-market delays. Pentamed® MD-EK10R00 films have slower aging properties and, therefore, increased shelf life. Additionally, higher sterilization chamber temperatures are not limited by the package so there is faster EtO cycle time and reduced risk of warping and sticking. For every 10°C increase in EtO chamber temperature, sterilization time can be reduced in half resulting in substantial cost savings for large volume OEMs.

Demonstrated by notched Izod-impact, dart-impact, and aged internal-drop tests, Pentamed® MDEK10R00 films are proven tough via third-party packaging validation tests following three rounds of EtO sterilization. This robust and durable film protects sterilized contents against damage and breach of sterile barriers adding to its increased shelf life. Due to the toughness of this film, the redesign of packaging to reduce material usage through downgauging or lightweighting is possible as is the need for secondary packaging.

"Pentamed® MD-EK10R00 high-performance co-polyester films were developed to address an unmet industry need for increased toughness and temperature performance," notes Justin Glass, Klöckner Pentaplast's business manager for medical device films in the Americas. "The expansion of our medical-device product range to include these films, along with our existing Pentamed® film line, continues to provide our customers with the broadest available selection of films in the industry."
