CNC Profile Grinder utilizes 2,600 rpm spindle.

Press Release Summary:

Equipped with dynamic linear drives for linear and rotary axes, Prokos provides workpiece dimensions of 300 x 300 x 300 mm with XYZ-axis feed rates of 120,000, 10,000, and 50,000 mm/min, respectively. Speed stroke grinding keeps heat out of part, allowing grinding of titanium. Machine features 12,000 rpm variable speed motor and GE Fanuc 18i control with color flat screen, menu bars, softkeys, and Windows(TM) GUI. Optional tool-changing system combines grinding, milling, and drilling operations.

Original Press Release:

New Blohm Prokos Boosts Productivity 30%, Reduces Wheel Costs

MIAMISBURG, OH - United Grinding unveils an entirely new Blohm profile grinder, the Prokos, at IMTS 2006.

The Prokos is the first machine of its type with dynamic linear drives for both linear and rotary axes, in combination with a high-speed spindle, allowing optimal performance of all operations. The linear motors make the machine up to 30% more productive and reduce wheel consumption more than 20%. An optional tool-changing system increases the flexibility of the Prokos, permitting complete machining of complex workpieces in a single setup by combining grinding, milling and drilling operations.

This added flexibility offers solutions to a wide range of precision machining applications, addressing the needs, for example, of the turbine industry, the machine tool and tooling industries, as well as the bearing industry.

One significant benefit, says Stine, is "speed stroke" grinding in which the machine takes very fast, yet very small cuts, unlike deep creep feed grinding. This effectively keeps the heat out of the part, allowing the grinding of titanium, which until now was deemed impossible.

Relevant specs
The new Blohm Prokos has workpiece dimensions of 300 mm (W) x 300 mm (L) x 300 mm (H). Machine table, 450 mm. X-axis feed rate, 120,000 mm/min. Wheelhead vertical travel, 400 mm. Y-axis feed rate, 10,000 mm/min. Wheelhead cross travel, 900 mm. Z-axis feed rate, 50,000 mm/min. A-axis swivel, 110°. A-axis swivel speed 20 rpm. Grinding spindle drive, 30 kW/2600 rpm. Three-speed variable speed motor, 12,000 rpm. Grinding wheel size, OD 300 x W 20 mm x ID 50 x 76.2.

Control
The GE Fanuc 18i is a robust and user-friendly CNC control. The color flat screen is cleanly arranged for simplified programming with menu bars, softkeys and a Windows(TM) graphic user interface. Setup is fully supported and aided by iconographics, and optional parallel operation permits programs to be entered and optimized during the grinding process. Loop interrupt cycles allow intermediate measurement. Other features include DNC capability and remote diagnostics via modem/phone line.

Although programming on the 18i is fast, easy and straightforward (no sophisticated programming expertise required), complex part geometries and grinding routines can be solved with equal ease and flexibility. Tool management of up to 50 dressing tools or grinding wheels permits quick and simple changeovers. Standard cycles and macros enable fast, simple program generation. Automatic swivel grinding angle calculation can be simulated for all contour dressing operations, eliminating potential collisions during actual dressing.

A user-friendly Siemens 840 D CNC control is also available upon request.
