ON Semiconductor Introduces High Performance Clock Distribution Solutions for Networking and Communications Applications

Ultra-Low Jitter, Dual Differential 2:1 Clock/Data Multiplexer & 3:1:10 Fanout Buffer for Next Generation System Designs

Embedded World - NUREMBERG, Germany. – ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), driving innovation in energy efficiency, has just released two new clock distribution ICs.

“The NB6L56 presents the industry with a more advanced 2:1 signal management solution. It is pin-to-pin compatible with existing products on the market, but offers greatly enhanced jitter performance, allowing a wider eye opening so that system reliability can be improved. It handles clocks speeds of up to 2.5 GHz and data streams of up to 2.5 Gbps with very low power consumption,” states Ryan Cameron, vice president of Industrial and Timing Products at ON Semiconductor. “This is complemented by the NB3F8L3010C, which provides a compelling combination of cost-effectiveness, flexibility and performance that make it highly suited to communication infrastructure applications.”

Operating from a supply voltage of 2.5V and 3.3V, the high performance NB6L56 2:1 clock/data multiplexer’s differential inputs incorporate internal 50 Ohm (Ω) termination resistors accessed through the VT pin. This feature allows the device to accept a broad variety of logic level standards, including low voltage positive emitter coupled logic (LVPECL), current mode logic (CML) and low voltage differential signaling (LVDS). Outputs are 800 millivolts (mV) emitter coupled logic (ECL) signals. The additive clock and data jitter produced is minimal even when operating at 2.5 Gigahertz (GHz) and 2.5 Gigabits/second (Gbps) rates respectively. This makes the NB6L56 highly optimized for use in SONET, Gigabit Ethernet and Fiber Channel network infrastructure, as well as other telecom and data communication applications.

The NB3F8L3010C is a 3:1 multiplexer and a 1:10 clock/data fanout buffer targeted at networking and communications applications. Operating from a 3.3 V or 2.5 V core supply, the device has differential inputs which accept LVPECL, LVDS, host clock signal level (HCSL) and stub series terminated logic (SSTL) signals. It has a total of 10 single-ended LVCMOS outputs each capable of running at 200 megahertz (MHz). Output skew is typically kept to just 10 picoseconds (ps). Both the NB3F8L3010C and NB6L56 devices support an industrial temperature range of -40 °C to 85 °C.

Packaging and Pricing

Both the NB6L56 and the NB3F8L3010C are supplied in a low profile 5 mm x 5 mm 32-pin QFN package. They are priced at $4.92 and $4.41 respectively for 1K unit quantities.
