National Semiconductor Adds New Low-Voltage, 3A Synchronous Buck Regulator to SIMPLE SWITCHER Family

High-Efficiency LM2853 Switching Regulator Powers Low Input-Voltage Digital ICs Including FPGAs, DSPs and ASICs

SANTA CLARA, Calif.-December 4, 2006 - Worldwide power management leader National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today announced the addition of a new, high-efficiency 3A synchronous buck regulator to its popular SIMPLE SWITCHER® product family. The highly integrated LM2853 synchronous switching regulator is a low component count solution for powering digital integrated circuits (ICs) from 3.3V or 5V voltage rails in applications such as broadband networking and communications infrastructure equipment where power efficiency and solution size are critical.

The LM2853 buck regulator, which offers power conversion efficiency up to 95 percent, extends National's family of high-efficiency synchronous SIMPLE SWITCHER products. The family includes the 1.5A LM3100 synchronous buck regulator with an input voltage range of 4.5V to 36V and the 2A LM2852 synchronous buck regulator with an input voltage range of 2.85V to 5.5V. The family features high efficiency and small solution size through the integration of MOSFET switches and PWM loop compensation. The new LM2853, along with all of National's SIMPLE SWITCHER products, is quick and easy to design using National's online WEBENCH® power supply design tools.

WEBENCH design tools include software that provides customers with a complete solution including schematics, component lists, guaranteed circuit performance and more. National's online design environment, complemented by National's evaluation boards, provides a total solution that has made the SIMPLE SWITCHER family the most widely accepted DC/DC converters. Since system power supply needs are often not defined until late in a project, the SIMPLE SWITCHER solution can be the key to getting products to market quickly and reliably.

Technical Features of the LM2853 Buck Regulator
The LM2853 is a synchronous, high-frequency step-down switching voltage regulator capable of driving up to a 3A load with excellent line and load regulation. The LM2853 can accept an input voltage between 3V and 5.5V and is offered in standard voltage options of 0.8V, 1.0V, 1.2V, 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.0V and 3.3V, eliminating the need for external feedback resistors. Other output voltages between 0.8V and 3.3V in 100 mV increments are also available by contacting National directly. The LM2853 has a fixed switching frequency of 550 kHz that enables use of small passive components. Soft-start and enable functions permit supply sequencing and in-rush current reduction. It also features internal PWM loop compensation for low component count and simplified design. It is offered in a 14-pin, 4.4 mm by 5 mm by 0.90 mm TSSOP package. The LM2853 is available for simulation on National's WEBENCH design tool. For more information on the LM2853 or to order samples and an evaluation board, visit www.national.com/pf/LM/LM2853.html.
