Blackburn® Hydraulic PowerTap(TM) System Provides Cleaner, Safer, Easier Wedge Tap Connector Installation

New Tool from Thomas & Betts Eliminates Need for Powder-Actuated Installation MEMPHIS, Tenn., - The Blackburn® Hydraulic PowerTap(TM) System from Thomas & Betts is a battery-powered wedge-tap connector installation tool that eliminates the need to use a powder-actuated, fire-on style tool, resulting in minimal cleaning and maintenance. Traditional installation methods call for a powder-actuated tool to drive the wedge into the connection. The Blackburn® Hydraulic PowerTap(TM) System employs a battery-powered hydraulic system that eliminates the mess and expense caused by powder-actuated cartridges. "Wedge-style connectors have proven to provide the best quality connection for overhead tap applications," said Mike Cawood, product manager for Thomas & Betts. "We have developed a safer, cleaner and more cost-effective system for inserting and seating the wedge into place." The Blackburn® Hydraulic PowerTap(TM) System features a quick-connect coupler that allows for a fast and positive engagement between the tool head assembly and the power unit. The C-member of a wedge-tap connector functions like a spring: it applies constant contact pressure to the conductor through the expansion and contraction of thermal cycling. An integrated positive-stop valve precisely matches the PowerTap(TM) System's output pressure to that of the wedge-tap connector. An audible bypass signal indicates when optimum pressure is achieved. To release the tool, depress the release lever to retract the tool head assembly from the connection; then remove the power unit from the tool head assembly by depressing the release lever on the quick-connect coupler. The Blackburn® Hydraulic PowerTap(TM) System is then ready for the next installation or storage. The Blackburn® Hydraulic PowerTap(TM) System is available with two head sizes to cover the full range of Thomas & Betts' Blackburn® Hydraulic PowerTap(TM) Connectors and Stirrups. It also features an ergonomic pistol-grip handle and a durable, weather-resistant housing.
