Axial-Lead Resistors offer power ratings to 1.0 W.

Press Release Summary:

Bulk Metal® Z-Foil axial-lead resistors of VTAZ series, featuring bulk metal foil element applied to ceramic substrate and etched planar construction, offer power ratings to 1.0 W and standard resistance values from 5 W to 300 kW. Along with low voltage coefficient of less than 0.1 ppm/V, products offer 0.2-1.0 W power ratings at +70°C as well as ±0.005% load-life stability at +70°C for 2,000 hr at rated power. Typical TCR is ±0.05 ppm/°C from 0 to +60°C.

Vishay's Enhanced VTAZ Series of Ultra-High-Precision Bulk Metal® Z-Foil Axial Resistors Offers Power Ratings to 1.0 W, Resistance Values to 300 kOhm, TCR Down to ± 0.05 ppm/°C, and Load-Life Stability of ± 0.005 % (50 ppm) at + 70 °C

Resistors Provide Direct Replacement for Wirewound with Improvement in All Areas, Direct Replacement for Thin Film with Accuracy and Stability

MALVERN, Pa. - Sept. 18, 2009 - Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today introduced the improved VTAZ series of ultra-high-precision Bulk Metal® Z-Foil axial-lead resistors with extended power ratings to 1.0 W and resistance values to 300 kW. While typical axial resistors offer a load-life stability of > 0.1 % through a 2000-hour workload, Vishay's new devices feature an improved load-life stability of ± 0.005 % (50 ppm) at + 70 °C for 2000 hours at rated power. For high-precision applications, the resistors offer a low typical TCR of ± 0.05 ppm/°C from 0 °C to + 60 °C and ± 0.2 ppm/°C from ( 55 °C to + 125 °C, + 25 °C ref, and tolerances to ± 0.01 %.

The enhanced VTAZ series offers a broad resistance range of 5 W to 300 kW, power ratings from 0.2 W to 1.0 W at + 70 °C, and a low voltage coefficient of < 0.1 ppm/V. Like all Vishay Foil resistors, the VTAZ devices are not restricted to standard values, and can be supplied with "as required" values (e.g. 1.2345 kW vs. 1 kW) at no extra cost or delivery time.

The resistors feature a unique concept in resistor manufacturing that allows designers to guarantee a high degree of accuracy, precision, and stability in fixed resistor applications. A proprietary Bulk Metal Foil element with known and controllable properties is applied to a special ceramic substrate. A resistive pattern is then photoetched by an ultra-fine technique developed by Vishay. The devices' etched planar construction results in the extremely low and reproducible reactance needed for high-frequency and pulse applications.

In applications requiring precise and stable resistors, TCR needs to be low over the full temperature range of the application. Only Z-Foil resistors, such as the VTAZ series, provide a very low absolute TCR that changes very little over the full temperature range of - 55 °C to + 125 °C and beyond. With Vishay Bulk Metal Foil resistors, a minimal shift in resistance will occur during the first few hundred hours of operation, with a very small and predictable change noted thereafter. Because load-life drift is minimalized in such a predictable and reliable way, control and correction circuitry can be eliminated, thereby saving cost in design, components, assembly and test.

Precision resistors based on BMF and Z-Foil technologies provide the best available specifications for precision, accuracy, and stability, delivering stable performance irrespective of changes in ambient temperature or electrical load and even after a long service life.

Offering the utmost in ESD immunity, the VTAZ devices withstand electrostatic discharges up to 25 kV, for increased reliability, and offer a non-inductive (< 0.08 µH), non-capacitive design. The devices are available with lead (Pb)-free and tin/lead alloy terminations.

Samples and production quantities of the VTAZ resistors are available now, with lead times of 5 working days for samples, and 5 weeks for standard orders.
