Vishay Intertechnology Releases ATEX-Certified CNY65Exi Optocoupler for Potentially Explosive Environments

Device Offers Intrinsic Safety for Gas and Dust Atmospheres With Best-In-Class Isolation Voltage of 11,600 V

MALVERN, Pa. - Now designers of machinery used in potentially explosive environments can upgrade to a new ATEX-certified optocoupler that has improved performance over competing devices. New from Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH), the CNY65Exi optocoupler meets the European Union's ATEX 94/9/EC directive for operation in potentially explosive atmospheres while offering best-in-class isolation voltage and comparative tracking index.

The CNY65Exi is certified to provide intrinsic safety protection with ATEX certificate PTB 03 ATEX 2033 U. It features best-in-class isolation voltage of 11,600 V and comparative index tracking (CTI) of 475 according to VDE 0303/DIN 53480. The device fulfills the ATEX gas [II (1) G (Ex ia) IIC] and dust [II (1) D (Ex ia) IIIC] provisions.

In compliance with IEC 60079-11, the CNY65Exi provides intrinsic safety for measurement and control technology. An electric circuit is intrinsically safe if any spark produced is not capable of causing ignition of a given explosive atmosphere for Zones 0 and 20. Equipment in this category is intended for use in areas in which explosive atmospheres caused by mixtures of air and gases, vapors, or mists or by air/dust mixtures are present continuously or frequently for long periods.

The CNY65Exi optocoupler uses infrared light to transmit data and control signals from the typically low-voltage control side to high-voltage equipment. The emitter and detector are separated by a distance of greater than 3 mm. The CNY65Exi's specially molded plastic package measures 17.8 mm by 9.6 mm with a height of 6.1 mm. It features multiple current transfer ratio (CTR) binning options between 50 % and 300 %. A very low coupling capacity (CK) of 0.3 pF provides superior noise immunity between input and output pins.

With its best-in-class isolation voltage and comparative tracking index, the CNY65Exi is expected to be widely adopted by manufacturers of instrumentation and process automation systems, natural gas metering and flow measurement devices, and power supply and motor switching equipment.

Samples and production quantities of the ATEX-certified CNY65Exi are available now, with lead times of six weeks for larger orders. Pricing for U.S. delivery is $4.00 per piece in 1,000-piece quantities. Follow optocouplers from Vishay at http://twitter.com/vishayindust.
