IMS Unveils New High Performance Additives for Polymers and Elastomers

[Houston, TX - September 11, 2002] - Improved Materials Strategies Inc. (IMS) has announced the successful development, testing and application of its high performance Surface Modified Silicon Carbide Polymer Matrix Composite (SPMC) additives.

Laboratory, dynamic and field testing have shown that IMS's SPMC additives significantly reduce friction and abrasion weight loss when added to polymers and elastomers without adversely affecting
the physical properties of the host material. SPMC additives have been tested at load ratings from 1% to 9%, with the optimal load percentage of the additive varying with specific materials and applications.

SPMC is available in several grades, each engineered for the specific requirements of the operative applications. Several grades are listed below, with their potential end-use applications:

SPMC-PA (Process agent)

Designed to act as a material flow enhancer for plastics extrusion. 2% to 5% loadings of SPMC-PA in a Resinoid phenolic resin more than doubled the extrusion rate. This allows for increased productivity, operating efficiencies, and margins.

SPMC-C/CF (Coatings and linings/Fine coatings and linings)

Designed to reduce abrasion weight loss in coatings and linings. At 3% loadings of SPMC-C in an epoxy coating, abrasion weight loss was lowered to one-fifth of the control sample.

SPMC-BT (Reciprocating/rotating seals)

Engineered for reciprocating and rotating shaft seal applications. Functional testing has shown the ability to reduce friction, abrasion weight loss and damaging stick-slip times from 32.5 seconds to 13.5 seconds.

SPMC-P (Polyurethane)

Designed to enhance PUR wear products. Test results for SPMC-P indicate significant reduction in abrasion weight loss.

SPMC-B (Belting)

Designed to reduce abrasion weight loss and heat buildup in flexible belts. Tests have shown up to a 15°F reduction in automotive belt temperature.

IMS has collaborated with companies to engineer SPMC additives that are application specific and, as such, are more tightly engineered to the application than are the general SPMC grades.

SPMC has been specified for use in two oilfield seals produced by Parker Hannifin, in four rotating and reciprocating shaft seals by St. Gobain, in hydrocyclone inserts and mud pump pistons by Elastech and in pipeline pigs by Pigs Unlimited. SPMC has been tested by 3M, Ausimont, Resinoid, Zeon, DuPont-Dow Elastomers and Bayer. Advanced testing continues at Chicago Rawhide, Federal Mogul, Greene Tweed, Schlumberger, F-NOK, Halliburton, Moyno, UTEX, Ceram-Kote, Goodyear, Dayco, Carboline and the U.S. Air Force, among others.

Parties who are interested in obtaining IMS SPMC additives for use in their operations and products should contact Garey G. Stark, Chairman & CEO of IMS Inc.
