Access Platform enables economical TDM/Ethernet services.

Press Release Summary:

Plug-and-play Orion 7400 SONET access platform enables carriers to deliver flexible, incremental-level Ethernet-based bandwidth services as well as TDM services on mass-market basis. Product leverages Generic Framing Procedure (GFP)-based Ethernet over SONET (EoS) standards, including Low- (VT 1.5) and High- (STS-1) order Virtual Concatenation. Interoperable with existing SONET infrastructure, it includes up to 16 Fast Ethernet ports in single 1.75 in. high device.

Larscom Launches Orion 7400 - Industry's First Multi-Service Access Platform for Economically Extending SONET to Deliver both TDM and Ethernet Services

The plug-and-play Orion 7400 sets a new economic threshold for fiber extension beyond the Metro Ring, enabling "Ethernet Everywhere"

MILPITAS, CA (May 19, 2003) - Larscom Incorporated (Nasdaq: LARS), a leading provider of WAN connectivity and network access equipment, today announced the Orion 7400 - a Next Generation SONET Multi-Service Access Platform designed to economize the extension of Metro Rings to customers located in lower density areas or multi-tenant buildings and enable carriers to deliver flexible, incremental level Ethernet-based bandwidth services as well as traditional TDM services on a mass market basis. With the new Orion 7400, carriers now have a profitable business case for fiber extension with just a single business customer paying as little as $700/mo in service revenue.1

"The Orion 7400 is the first significant product on the market to leverage the new Generic Framing Prcedure (GFP)-based Ethernet over SONET (EoS) standards - including both Low- (VT 1.5) and High- (STS-1) order Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) - to allow carriers to deliver new, more flexible Ethernet services without cannibalizing revenue from their T1 and T3 service offerings," said Gurdip Jande, Vice President of Marketing at Larscom. "More importantly, it is a plug-and-play solution for the customer location designed to be interoperable with the carrier's existing SONET infrastructure including optical add/drop multiplexers (OADM) and management systems (OSS) - guaranteeing the carrier's ubiquity of service to its subscribers across the country."

The demands for higher bandwidth services are growing faster than carriers' ability to easily and efficiently support affordable greater-than-T1 (>1.5 Mbps) services for multiple subscribers at a time. This is driving carriers to search for better and more economical ways to extend their SONET infrastructures to offer new Ethernet-based services. Based on data from the Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Department of Energy, the market for data access service with bandwidth in excess of 1.5 Mbps will reach 1.08 million lines in 2008.

"The Larscom Orion 7400 provides carriers with a flexible, low-cost solution for expanding the addressable market for Ethernet over SONET and legacy SONET services," said Mark Bieberich, Senior Analyst, Communications Network Infrastructure at the Yankee Group. "By adopting the new Ethernet over SONET standards, such as Generic Framing Procedure, the Orion 7400 enables carriers to maximize bandwidth efficiency and manage services with minimal operational expense."

Orion 7400 Features and Benefits
At a fraction of the cost and size of a SONET ADM, the Orion 7400 serves as customer location equipment (CLE) or as an adjunct to a legacy SONET ADM to deliver a variety of services -10/100 Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, T1 and T3. Initially, the network interface can be OC-3/OC-3c (OC-12/OC-12/c, or STS-1 will also be available before the end of the year) to SONET Metro or Regional Rings. Other features and benefits include the following:
o Up to 16 Fast Ethernet ports in a single, 1 RU (1.75 inches high) size device;
o Standards-based Ethernet over SONET using GFP for multi-vendor compatibility;
o Both Low- (VT 1.5) and High- (STS-1) order VCAT for extremely granular and efficient use of SONET bandwidth as well as for compatibility with legacy transport networks;
o Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS) for the ability to dynamically provision bandwidth on demand;
o NEBS Level 3 certified and currently undergoing OSMINE certification
o Powerful Management Agents for operational excellence and to ensure interoperability with all vendor products, the system supports management capabilities typically found only in high-end OADMs. Specifically, the Orion 7400 offers:

o TL-1, SNMP, HTTP
o SONET DCC (OSI and IP)
o RS-232 and Ethernet
o Dial-Modem Support

"I am impressed by Larscom's new Orion 7400," said Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics, an international market research firm for the data networking and telecommunications industries. "It is simple and economical, with the right set of product functions that carriers are looking for to start deploying Ethernet services on a mass market basis, and service providers don't have to compromise their current TDM services revenue to do it."

Mr. Howard continued, "By launching this product, Larscom continues its history of meeting carriers' needs for generating new revenue with a very affordable product. This is more important than ever in today's limited CapEx environment."

Orion 7400 Pricing and Availability
Larscom's Orion 7400 will be demonstrated at Supercomm in booth # 23229 and generally available in August 2003. At a list price of about $5,000, the Orion 7400 significantly changes the economics of fiber extension to the customer location. It can be purchased through Larscom directly by calling 1-888-LARSCOM or through a number of Larscom Authorized Resellers available worldwide.
