GeoPraxis Launches First Web-Based Energy Analysis Application for the Architecture and Engineering Construction Industry

GeoPraxis’ Green Building Studio Raises the Bar Providing True Interoperability with Leading Building Information Modeling and 3D-CAD Tools

Chicago, Ill. – April 21, 2004 -- GeoPraxis, an architectural, engineering and construction software company, today announced the release of Green Building Studio web service, enabling early stage building design teams to integrate whole building energy analysis into their architectural practice. Green Building Studio (GBS) provides early stage energy analysis using DOE-2 and EnergyPlus while identifying appropriate product information to building design teams. Users of Autodesk, Graphisoft, and Bentley 3D-CAD and building information modeling (BIM) tools can use the Green Building Studio at no charge. GBS can be used to share data with your engineers using other complex engineering analysis and sales tools, opening the doors to design teams working to qualify their early stage building designs for LEED programs, as well as local codes and utility efficiency programs.

Green Building Studio (GBS) streamlines building design, seamlessly linking building information models or 3-D CAD building designs with energy analysis. GBS enables architects and engineers to immediately understand the operational and energy implications of early design decisions using Green Building XML (gbXML) connectors for Autodesk Revit 6, Autodesk Architectural Desktop 3.3, 2004, 2005, Autodesk Building Systems 2004, 2005, and Graphisoft's ArchiCAD 8.0 and 8.1 both on Mac and Windows. Connectors for Bentley products will be available later in 2004. The GBS web service is generally available as of April 21, 2004, and can be used with building designs in all North American locations. Architects and design teams can register for the Green Building Studio web service directly at www.greenbuildingstudio.com. Green Building Studio will also be participating in the Autodesk booth at the AIA Conference in Chicago, Ill, June 10-12, 2004.

“The doors to the Green Building Studio are now open, removing significant time and cost barriers to efficient and sustainable building design,” said John F. Kennedy, GeoPraxis’ President and CTO. “The incorporation of gbXML connectors by the major BIM and CAD vendors enables the Green Building Studio web service to use the wealth of information in early design stage models, and provide almost immediate feedback on the energy implications of architectural design scenarios. This is a huge break-though for green building design and LEED qualification, but is equally necessary for understanding the impacts of almost any building product or technology. GBS’s Product Advisor feature also points the design team directly to information on building products appropriate to their building, simplifying the early specification process.”

“The launch of the GeoPraxis Green Building Studio adds significant value to the existing benefits of building information modeling and moves us closer to realizing the building lifecycle management vision,” said Phillip G. Bernstein, FAIA, vice president of Autodesk’s Building Solutions Division. “With the ability to transfer data to the Green Building Studio from an Autodesk building information modeling application, architects and engineers can now perform faster and more accurate energy analysis resulting in better performing buildings.”

Development of the Green Building Studio was supported with funding from the California utilities and the California Energy Commission’s Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) program. With this release, GeoPraxis has extended Green Building Studio coverage across all regions of North America, using ASHRAE 90.1 standards for commercial new building construction. Additional capabilities include export tools that develop geometrically accurate building model input files for leading engineering analysis software packages such as EnergyPlus, DOE-2.2, and Trane Trace 700. Building product manufacturers can easily configure their proprietary software to utilize this early design information, and should contact GeoPraxis directly.

Future plans for Green Building Studio include expansion to cover Canadian provinces, European countries, and the Asia Pacific region in upcoming releases.
