April 30, 2002 - Orion(TM) 896 input or 102 output virtual matrix switch transports CCTV, PTZ, and Access Control signals via one single-mode optical fiber. System is tolerant to faults when implemented with second fiber. It provides total redundancy in self-healing ring configuration, and operates in temperatures from -40 to +74 deg C. With solid-state current limiters and status indicating LEDs, Orion meets NEMA TS-1/TS-2 equipment environmental specifications.

IFS Introduces Orion(TM) Virtual Matrix Switch Fiber Optic Video Transmission System

IFS Introduces the first cost-effective and practical transmission solution designed specifically for large-scale video surveillance networks.

NEWTOWN, CT., . March 15, 2002 - International Fiber Systems Incorporated (IFS), a leading manufacturer of fiber optic transmission equipment, has announced the introduction the Orion(TM) Fiber Optic Communication System. The Orion(TM) System is a 896 input or 102 output virtual matrix switch that provides system designers with a cost-effective fiber optic transmnission system platform for video, audio and data communications.

The system utilizes industry-standard MPEG-2 compression to encode and de-code the video and high-quality fiber optic transceivers to set a new standard for video quality in applications where large numbers of CCTV cameras need active monitoring. Each Video Input and Output Module provides full support for high-quality audio, bi-directional data and two contact-closures that can be used for voice, PTZ control and alarm signal inputs. The OrionT System provides full "drop and insert" capabilities allowing any combination of video, audio data signals to be added, monitored or dropped at any node within the system. The Orion(TM) System will be designed with an open software system architecture that allows the Orion(TM) System to be compatible and easily integrated with all major Access Control Equipment, CCTV Camera, Public Address and Alarm Equipment manufacturers. All PTZ control functions are supplied by the camera manufacturer and are inserted directly into the system via the data input control port on any video output module. This allows the Orion(TM) System to be totally transparent all data encoding.

The Orion(TM) System is easily configured using software based on Microsoft Windows(R) products. The Orion(TM) system allows the user to configure the system, check the status of all the nodes on the system or switch a camera to a given monitor with a simple click and drag feature.

"There has been a need within the markets IFS competes for a cost-effective method of transporting large numbers of CCTV, PTZ, Access Control and other signals in a given location." Said Nhu Dang, IFS Product Manager. "Until the Orion(TM) System, this had to be accomplished with multiple fiber runs and with video multiplexers and switchers. Utilizing the Orion(TM) System, this in now easily accomplished using just one single mode optical fiber." Dang continued.

"We feel that there are many applications such as airports, rail stations, amusement parks and Intelligent Transportation Systems, where the need for large scale monitoring is critical," said Richard Malstrom, Vice President of Sales. "This product's capability opens new doors that will maximize the use of the limited fiber that may be available to them." According to Malstrom, "This is a great problem-solving solution for utilizing a facility's fiber optic backbone and in cases where the number of fibers allocated for additional systems other than the companies data network."

The Orion(TM) System is an extremely fault tolerant network when implemented with a second fiber. It provides total redundancy for a highly reliable network in a self-healing ring configuration. With an operating temperature range of -40 degrees C to +74 degrees C, solid-state current limiters and status indicating LEDs, the Orion(TM) System also meets NEMA TS-1/TS-2 and Caltrans traffic signal control equipment environmental specifications.
