Vishay RFWaves Reference Design for Wireless Video Monitoring System Features 2.4-GHz Wireless Link, Range Up to 100 Meters

MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA - December 28, 2005 - Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today announced the release of a complete Vishay RFWaves reference design for a wireless monitoring system using a fully digital 2.4-GHz wireless link. Target applications for the system include home intercoms, video baby monitors, home video monitoring systems, and business video surveillance.

The new design uses the Vishay RFWaves RFW122-M-PA 1-Mbps direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) half duplex transceiver as its core component, along with a power amplifier for enhancing the operating range.

The RFW122-M-PA provides an output power of 25 dBm and receiver sensitivity of -75 dBm while delivering real time MPEG-4 compressed video. The specified operating range for the design is 100 meters indoors and 300 meters outdoors. The high 2.4-GHz bandwidth of the RFW122-M-PA and the exceptional link robustness result in a very reliable and high-quality video and audio link.

The system consists of two units, a camera and a display screen. These are linked by a high-quality, one-way video link from the camera to the display screen and by a high-quality, two-way audio link between the two units.

The reference design allows multiple remote camera units to be connected to a single base unit. Each remote unit has a CMOS image sensor which provides video stream or still images. The video stream (with audio) is encoded in real time to MPEG-4 by a Zoran ZR452x processor and is transmitted back to the base unit. The base unit controls which remote unit is active. It receives the video stream (and can also send audio back), decodes it in real time, and displays it on an internal LCD or external CRT monitor. The base unit can also store the video images and audio to an MMC/SD card. A USB interface provides direct access to the stored data.

The base and remote unit can be battery-operated.

The system has been designed and tested to coexist with 802.11b/g and Bluetooth and is compliant with FCC, ETSI, and Telec regulations. Complete details of the reference design are available on request from shiriz@rfwaves.com. Pricing for the RFW122-M-PA transceiver, which is available now, starts at $7.60 each in 10,000-piece quantities.
