VerathonŽ Inc. Introduces GlideScopeŽ Cobalt Single-Use Video Laryngoscope; Enables Fast Intubations; Eliminates Time-Consuming Disinfection

BOTHELL, Wash., June 4 / -- Verathon Inc. (formerly Diagnostic Ultrasound Corp.) is pleased to introduce the GlideScopeŽ Cobalt, a single-use video laryngoscope that provides a clear, real-time view of the patient's airway, enabling quick intubation. Optimized for demanding operating room (OR), emergency department (ED) and intensive care unit (ICU) applications, the GlideScopeŽ Cobalt single-use design, which eliminates the need for disinfecting the "blade," is ideal for fast-paced intubation

GlideScopeŽ video laryngoscopes (GVLŽ) provide a real time view of the airway and of endotracheal tube placement, minimizing the need for a "blind" intubation procedure. The GlideScopeŽ Cobalt design is based off the popular GlideScopeŽ reusable video laryngoscope that achieves a Cormack-Lehane Grade I or Grade II view 99 percent(1) of the time.

"The rapid, widespread acceptance of GlideScopeŽ as both a routine and difficult airway tool has made GlideScopeŽ a high demand instrument in the OR," said Dr. John Pacey, inventor of the GlideScopeŽ and President of Verathon MedicalŽ Canada ULC. "Anesthesiologists began asking us for a single-use version, so they could eliminate the wait that came from disinfecting a reusable instrument. The team at Verathon MedicalŽ Canada developed Cobalt to meet that need."

GlideScopeŽ Cobalt consists of: a slim video baton which houses a high-resolution camera with a patented anti-fogging mechanism to resist lens contamination; a non-glare color monitor; and single-use, sterile GVLŽ Stats in large and small sizes that offer a patented 60-degree blade angulation. GlideRite(TM) tracheal tubes and a 90 degree rigid stylet, both used to facilitate intubation, are provided, along with a protective cradle for the video baton. An instructional manual as well as setup and use quick reference cards are also included.

"The elimination of the cleaning delay makes the GlideScopeŽ Cobalt useful in urgent situations and for institutions with a high GVLŽ usage rate," stated Timothy Turkstra, MD, FRCPC, Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine, London Health Sciences Centre, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada.

"As a single-use device, it also offers a potential advantage with respect to reduced disease transmission, and it follows the current trend of using single-use medical devices wherever possible," added Philip M Jones, MD, FRCPC, Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine, London Health Sciences Centre, University Hospital, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada.

While GlideScopeŽ Cobalt is available now, it will have its official new product launch at the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) Annual Meeting in Munich, Germany on June 9, 2007. (VerathonŽ Booth # 45, 46 & 48)
